Walgreens: Updates From the Field 4/29

by Christie Bisbee on April 29, 2012

Here are some updates from my shopping trip today!

J&J DEAL: I found some nice items priced between $2.79 and $3.39 that you can use for the Johnson & Johnson First Aid Bag deal. I especially like the Band-Aids because we seem to go thru a lot of those! Here are a couple of ideas….

Buy J&J Gauze Pads $2.79 B1G1 50% OFF
Total = $4.18
(2) $1/1 Johnson & Johnson Red Cross Product, exp. 6/30/12 (SS 04/15/12)
Total = $1.09 EACH + FREE First Aid Bag!

Buy (2) Band-Aid 60ct $3.39 B1G1 50% OFF
Total = $5.08
(2) $1/1 Band-Aid Product with QuiltVent Technology, exp. 5/8/12 (SS 04/15/12)
Total = $1.54 EACH + FREE First Aid Bag!

ONE TOUCH METER DEAL: I had no problem using both the $10/1 coupon and the $10/1 Walgreens coupon for this deal. I used the $10/1 coupon from HERE but there’s also one HERE and some of you got it in your inserts today too!

Buy (1) One Touch UltraMini $19.99
$10.00 on Any OneTouch Ultra Mini MeterOR
$10/1 OneTouch UltraMini Blood Glucose Monitor (5717) May Walgrees Coupon Book
= FREE! 🙂

I plan to donate the one I got to a local charity that helps families that are currently out of work and uninsured.

DEPENDS DEAL: I had no problem with the Depends deal. Remember, you aren’t going to see that deal in the paper ad. It’s a bonus buy which means although it’s available in the store, it’s only advertised on-line.

I know many of you had concerns about the Depends and the Kotex because they are the same manufacturer. As long as the Register Rewards that print are for different dollar amounts it does not matter that they are the same manufacturer. You can roll from one to the other, you can buy them both in one transaction.

STARBUCKS REFRESHERS: No Starbucks at my store yet. That’s ok however, we’ll have some upcoming deals on this one (including a free after Register Rewards deal starting 5/13) so I’ll just hold it till then. If anyone tastes one – let us know what’s it’s like!

BELVITA DEAL: Only the Belvita Oat was marked at my store as part of the Register Reward deal. The Blueberry was not. 🙁 I kind of had my heart set on Blueberry. If anyone got the Blueberry and it printed the Register Reward let us know! My normal manager wasn’t there and I didn’t want to risk it.

I’ll be visiting a few more stores to see what other deals I find. In the meantime… how was your shop? What deals did you find? Let us know! 🙂

Is this a different deal than what Christie mentioned? Someone please explain the bags, somehow I missed this, but I could really use first aid stuff. Thanks!

Reply

Jen May 3, 2012 at 10:22 am

JoAnn – yes the deal is even better at Walgreens – you only have to buy two items and get the free bag. And the bag has coupons in it!

I went to my Walgreens and the Sonic toothbrush
That was suppose to have a $3 RR did not print.
However mine did not instead the price was $4.19 instead
Of $6.99. Anyone else have this problem?

jennifer April 30, 2012 at 12:11 am

i actually got one for 1.74 and one (a little different packaging) was 6.99. the rr didn’t print on the 1.74 one but i went back and they gave it to me without even checking my receipt. not sure what happened but i left there a happy camper.

I did nto get the register reward with my Belvita today. Thankfully the manager fixed ot for me but apparently there was some issue with them and mine was the honey oat that was advertised.

Reply

jennifer April 30, 2012 at 12:12 am

same for me at my walgreens. i had to go back and get them. i will have to start checking these things more closely before i leave the store. the manager couldn’t make them print out either so he ended up giving me the cash.

I love the belvita with oats! they are yummy. They taste like oatmeal cookies.

Reply

Christie April 29, 2012 at 5:51 pm

Good to know! 🙂 For some reason Oats just didn’t sound very exciting compared to Blueberry so I didn’t get it. LOL. Glad to hear they are good too!

Reply

Melissa April 29, 2012 at 6:59 pm

I like the oat one as well, a cross between an animal cracker and a graham cracker taste to me… the blueberry are the very best though

Leslie April 29, 2012 at 7:59 pm

I agree! I was skeptical at first, but I absolutely LOVE the oat ones! I also really like the apple cinnamon, but Wags doesn’t carry that kind 🙁

I didn’t care for the blueberry ones, but I LOVE the oat ones! Those are addictive. The apple cinnamon sound great as well, but I haven’t tried those yet.

I was able to get 4 one touch meters to donate to a local charity.

Reply

LoriSaves April 29, 2012 at 11:40 pm

Local charities can’t really use these kinds of meters- and why bother buying 4 of them just so you can “donate”?

Sounds pretty pointless- I know from personal experience that donating these to nursing homes, shelters, etc are a waste- they usually throw them away 🙁

Reply

tabatha April 30, 2012 at 12:56 am

Melissa, Keep doing what your doing. NOT all nursing homes are careless as hers, anything free to donate is ALWAYS welcomed. I donated 10 last time this sale came up to the department of family and children services. When the social workers have to pick up kids and sometimes they dont have everything they need. This is one of those things that others dont think about. Dont let the negativity and simple minded of others keep you from doing good.

Reply

Brenda April 30, 2012 at 5:08 am

LoriSaves,
Wow, that’s really unfortunate that they waste them. Some charities can’t get enough of them. The one that I volunteer most often at actually posts signs when the drugstores have them on sale to encourage their volunteers to pick them up for free.

Reply

jane April 30, 2012 at 12:37 pm

The problem with donating glucose meters is that you have to have a prescription for the strips to go with them in order to get insurance to pay and they are expensive!! If there is no one with a prescription for the meter you are donating then they are useless. Most insurance companies will only approve certain meters and if the Ultra is not on their list then the machine can’t be used unless the strips are bought out of pocket 🙁
FYI: the strips have to be for the machine you are using or they aren’t accurate.
My mom is a diabetic.

Reply

Lucy April 30, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Um, Jane, I highly doubt the beneficiaries of Melissa’s kindness and generosity are concerned about what meters/strips insurance will pay for – they most likely don’t have insurance. Hence the need for donated meters and all of the other supplies people like Melissa are able to provide.

Reply

Lisa April 30, 2012 at 3:17 pm

I have to say that I agree with you LoriSaves. I am all in favor of donating however it seems that sometimes people who actually buy the supplies for their own use are being denied product. Alot of medical supplies and medicinal items will not be accepted when donating. I have been distubed by what I see at my local Walgreens when something is free. When the I-Cool was free I seen a young girl in her twenties buying approx. 15 boxes. How much menopause meds can a twenty something need?? Then the key word is Im “donating”. Most charities that I know of will not take pills as a donation. I wish that those who donate medical supplies would at least wait until the end of the sale to access product that they want to be donated so that the shelf is not cleaned out first thing Sunday mornings and those who need them can have a chance to buy. I dont think that it is negative to consider the diabetic that has to buy their own supplies have an opportunity to get what they need…..it is being considerate!!! It is the people who are not “poor” enough for social services yet not “wealthy” enough to afford health care that find it hard to afford medical supplies.

Reply

Karen A. April 30, 2012 at 2:14 pm

As a RN that knows a little about this- it is absolutely worth EVERY effort you make to donate these! Yes, you do need a prescription for the test strips- but when people bring these in to us- everyone knows there are generally a small amount of strips in each box. (This one has 10). That means I can check the glucose reading of 10 people who would otherwise not get a blood sugar check! Additionally, find a Diabetes Foundation near you- a juvenile foundation would be perfect (Look in the yellow pages- I can assure you someone nearby can use these!) We OFTEN have kids come in -distressed, and forgot their meters. I pull one of these freebies out, and check their sugar and then send the meter with them to their foster care, etc. There are MANY charities that would take these and use them. Nursing homes- not likely because Medicare doesn’t always cover the strips. However, ONE TOUCH brand is very common and often IS covered. Thanks so much Melissa for thinking of organizations like mine that make a difference- YOU are part of that!!

Reply

Annie April 30, 2012 at 9:29 pm

Thank you for your imput Karen A. I did notice that there are 10 strips in each box and thought that someone could use the meter it least 10 times, so I don’t consider it a waste.

Reply

Kim May 4, 2012 at 10:01 pm

I am a school nurse in a large school district. We have many diabetics. Many times the kids run out of strips, forget to bring their meters and the parents can’t or won’t bring their meters that particular day, or they are kids that fall through the cracks because the parents make to much money to access medicaid but not enough to be able to purchase private insurance. Please consider your local school districts as a place to donate the meters. I can guarantee that they will be greatly appreciated.

I was able to get the Starbucks drink. Will try it at work tomorrow! I also had no trouble with the Depends deal. However, the register did not ring up the Mentos gum as 2/$2, and it was a Bonus Buy. CVS also had the Mentos for same price, so I just got it there. I had some Kotex RRs from last week, so stocked up on the Pure bottled water for my daughter’s dorm room next fall. My store had cases and cases of it.

Got 8 crystal light mixes with 6 online mqs promo on the crystal light FB and the best part was that I was short 2 coupons but there was a $0.50 off one crystal light tearpad at the store! they were stocked with crystal light and i was able to grab some for my family! 🙂 Btw, the RR printed fine–no problems–and there were signs posted.

RR did not print for the belvida. The lady did find a way to force a RR for 5$ after reading the ad. Also she had to rekey the crystal light. All my store had was the new ones that ring up for 3.99 each. She credited me with 2$ for each one of the 4. I used the 1$ off of 2 coupons also. Can’t wait to try them, the new flavors sound pretty good and better than plain old h2o all of the time. Does anyone know if you can get 6 lean cuisine in one transaction and use the May book for 3$/3 ? I also have a catalina that is 1.50 off of 6, so that’s why I’m wondering.
thanks !

We did NOT like the starbucks drinks at my house. They have the truvia sweetener in it and non of our bellies can process artificial sweeteners:( More for the next couponer!

Reply

Dave April 29, 2012 at 7:56 pm

We got the Starbucks drinks and I think they taste terrible. The green coffee extract leaves a nasty flavor (and I’m a huge coffee drinker). Not crazy about the truvia taste either (although, note to Amy, Truvia is not artificial… it’s made from a plant, so it is a natural sweetener).

Reply

Andrew April 29, 2012 at 8:16 pm

Hi Dave! I tried the Raspberry Pomegranate one. I’m not a fond of any of these kinds of drinks because they taste like carbonated medicine to me!

I also have a strange “aftertaste” in my mouth right now, but I washed it down with some water w/ lemon. At least it was free! I wouldn’t go out of my way to pay out-of-pocket for this product though.

A note for the J&J First Aid Bag: SOME of the bags contain “$15 worth of J&J coupons” and some bags do not. If you are going for this deal, make sure you look around for the ones that DO contain the coupons!

The Depends moneymaker was nice- they only had L-XL though. Off to the donation bin it goes!

My WG also had Six Star Pro Nutrition Chocolate Protein powder on clearance for $12! A good, decent product at a great price. Check your store if you need, or know someone who buys work-out supplements!

Can anyone tell me how the Crystal Light Deal would work if I have 2 BOGO coupons and 2 $2/1 coupons? I couldn’t seem to get my brain around it today. Would the “free” ones from the BOGO coupon count towards the $15 total or not?

Reply

mary April 29, 2012 at 10:50 pm

I have never been able to get a BOGO and $/X coupon to work together at Walgreens. The register has always linked a BOGO coupon to both items for me. I know some people say they do it though. If you are trying that way, you would just need to get 4 and use the 2 BOGO coupons and the 2 $2/1 coupons with the thinking that the BOGO attaches to the ones you are getting free and the $2 Qs attach to the two you are paying for. It will work like that sometimes at CVS. It is against policy at Target and Publix to do this though. If it doesn’t work for you, just buy 6 and use all four coupons. Lucky you to have such good ones. I had two $1 coupons and a $1/2.

depends on the cashier. They should give you the 1/2 price product free, but sometimes will give the full price free leaving the 1/2 price product to pay for. Don’t know exact pricing, sorry. It is definitely a YMMV situation.

Reply

couponjon April 29, 2012 at 11:05 pm

where I shop the full price one is free leaving the half off one to pay for. for example deodorant 4.00 but buy one and only pay 2.00$ for both – if you had a 1 dollar coupon, you could use it and it would reduce your total to 1 dollar for both. That is how I ended up with my little body wash problem. I think I got around 30 over the last 2 months that were either very cheap or free. That’s about the max though because there seems to be a fine line between being well stocked & an OCD hoarder.
Hope this helps,
Jon

Also, I bought 4 Belvita (all blueberry, didn’t know the flavor made a difference in the RR deal) and 2 crystal light. No RR printed. I didn’t say anything because the cashier is new and my 4 year old was calling me crazy for couponing so I just let it go. Now I’m guessing it was the blueberry.

Reply

jennifer April 30, 2012 at 12:21 am

i don’t think it was because of the blueberry. several have had problems with the 5.00 rr printing out.

Reply

Jackie April 30, 2012 at 12:14 am

I tried alternating the Depends RR with the Kotex RR, but it wouldn’t print the new RR for me. It worked fine when I left off the Kimberly Clark RR’s tho. Also, I bought 8 bottles of Pantene today. They are regularly $4.99, but some were on clearance for $3.99. Both cashiers that I had wanted to mark the 50% bottles as free, but I kindly let them know this should be the full priced bottle. If they weren’t running a sale, I would get a full price bottle for free. The manufacturer refunds the full amount of the bottle. The 50% off one bottle is the sale Walgreens is running and my coupon should not be reduced because of their sale. The first cashier contacted a manager who agreed. He said the coupon reimburses up to $4.99, so there is no loss to Walgreens by discounting the full priced bottle. As for Belvitas, early this morning I bought 3 Oats and 3 Blueberry and had no issues with RRs printing on them. But I did overhear someone complaining about the RR not printing at the second store I went to this evening. I did not stick around to find out the final outcome though.

The $5 RR for the Wheat Thins did not print for me. I bought 6 boxes, two boxes of protein bars and 8 RRs. The cashier figured it was due to the number of RRs used. They rang up the Wheat Thins separately and it still did not print.

When I saw that they were buy 1 get one 50% off, I purchased 4 and took my bag and coupons to the front. It happend to be a manager that mentioned that I only needed to buy 2 JJ products to get the free bag and asked if I wanted another free bag.

Help! Christie.
Last night i went to walgreens and my transaction looks like this.
1 ritz crackers 2.79
2 planters 2/$7
2 belvita oat 2/$6 Total 15.79
used 2 $1/1 for the belvita’s, 1 $1.50/2 planters and a 10RR and payed $2.84.
I thought i was supposed to get 5RR and didn’t so i call the customer service and told them that i didn’t get them and the lady told me that because i used a RR it would not print and that it is stated in the back of the RR ticket that if you use a RR on other purchases that triggers a RR you would not get the RR. I hope you understand what i am trying to say and tell me if this is true. I wanted to call the catalina and maybe they can mail the RR to me but i don’t have their phone #. Please help!.

Reply

Christie April 30, 2012 at 11:55 am

Yes call Catalina – using a RR to pay has nothing to do with it. I think the Belvita wasn’t programmed properly into their system for the RR. Check out my post below…

I bought 5 blueberry belvita and the rr didn’t print. They had a form to fill out and mail to get the rr for participating kraft products. It goes to retail client service in St. Petersburg, FL. I had the mgr go get me an envie with a stamp since they wouldn’t fix it at the store level. Hope it comes faster than the 6-8 weeks it says. As a side note I can not find a store with even one single box of kotex at all so I have not been able to get any, not even one for this month lol.

Myra April 30, 2012 at 12:41 pm

I went to 2 Walgreens yesterday and did a transaction at each one for 3 Belvita (some blueberry & some golden oat) and 2 planters peanuts. Both times the RR didn’t print so the manager did her thing & it printed. What was strange was that at one of the Walgreens when the manager tried printing it, it didn’t print. She tried with all Belvita & with all Planters & nothing so she grabbed a package of Oreos which is also part of that rr deal & it printed with those. Also, I found the Starbucks only at one of the two stores, they had 3 different flavors, Haven’t tried it yet, but I will today :0)

Belvita (4 oat, 1 blueberry) RR didn’t print for me either. First they blamed the coupons ($1/1), then they thought I used RR’s (nope). Finally, she gave me a $5 gift card, but I really feel like they need to work on the RR system. CVS always goes so much smoother for me, plus they can force print an ECB if it doesn’t go.

Reply

Zer April 30, 2012 at 2:13 pm

Good to know that I am not alone. I bought 3 Belvita Oat and 2 Blueberry and it was $15, I used 5 $1/1 coupons and the RR didn’t print. I did use some other RRs on some Reach floss but they came from Pepsi and Goody. The manager told me it was because I used coupons and my out of pocket was below $15. I told him that it shouldn’t matter that I used coupons or not, I still bough $15 worth. I have called the issue in to Walgreens customer service and am waiting to hear from them. On another note, the Oat ones are so good! I haven’t tried Blueberry yet.

Has anyone tried the Belvita deal since Monday to see if it is now printing the RR? I want to try it but am hesitant since it didn’t appear to be working properly early in the week. Thanks!

I don’t know if anyone is checkign these comments anymore but FYI the RR for the Depends rolled today when I accidently used the Depend $3.50 RR for a purchase instead of the Kotex. Use at your own risk but I think I will try again tomorrow and see what happens!

I love Starbucks coffee – but the refreshers – ugh. Try ONE first before you buy. If you like the taste of 5Hour Energy, you might like these. In all fairness, I only tried the Strawberry and Pomegranate ones, maybe the Orange one is better….

I bought regular yesterday 5/16 and it didn’t roll for me but someone else said that on 5/16 they bought super plus and it rolled for them…??? So I don’t know. I’m going to be a guinea pig and go try it today on the super plus but I think maybe it’s because it’s in TX? I don’t know honestly but if anyone tries it I’d like to know BC I still have a bunch of Qs left (like 42) and my store doesn’t care how many transactions you do because people in my town don’t really coupon anyway. Our store just got over 100 boxes in and said they don’t care if I use all 42 Qs!! if it’s not it’ll still be $1 money maker even if I pay OOP because I have a $2 off Q and I’ll get $3 RR back! I’ll be using a lot of these RRS to stock up on coke 12pks next week they’ll be 3/$10+ you’ll get a $10RR for buying $20 in coke products! Yay!

Okay so here are the coupon tearpads and peelies I have found in stores this week.

Walgreens- 50cents off 1 crystal light~ $1 off 2 Ghihardelli bars~ $2 off 1 visene~And on ALL of the Carefree, Stayfree and OB packages there are $20 worth of coupon boolets attached!! they are little thick peelies~On the endcaps all of the johnson and johnson first aid stuff has 75cents,$1, and$2 peelies on them!! All of the Hanes underwear, undershirts, and boxers, and socks have $1 peelies on them so save these for a sale! a while back I found underwear 3 packs marked down to $1.50 each! In the newer SS inserts there were $1 off skinny cow diet snack bars and I found the big boxes of them marked down to $2 at walgreens.

Dollar General- I found 25 cents off of Ragu tearpad~ 25 cents off of poptart peelies (they’re the size of the side of the box)~ 50 cents off of miniwheats (on the boxes)~BOGO Dove Candy bars (which you will want to use at Walgreens this week to make the dove bars 25 cents each)~ In the clearance they had the Schick Razors marked down to $5.99 and there is a $4 coupon in one of the SS inserts. The supreme brownie and dessert bars are only $2 here this week so I went and used some of the $1 off coupons on them.

Walmart- Krusteaz Muffin Mix (the bottles where you ad water and shake them) Had 55 cent off peelies on them which doubled to $1 at dillons making them 89 cents!! and the 7UP and Sundrop had 55cent off hangtags last week so you might keep your eyes peeled for those! We also found tearpads for $1 off of the minibottles of coke 8 pks when you buy any frozen food (tearpads) which makes for a good deal because you can get the $1 Chimichangas or burritoes and the pop for just the price of the pop. Also Free Vitamin Water with the purchase of 3 coke products.

Kroger-Bakers-Dillons- We found blinkies on the bumblebee tuna which will be great when they’re on sale again for 78 cents! at dillons that’ll be a moneymaker because it will double to $1~ There were peelies on the kraft BBQ sauce for buy 2 BBQ sauce save $2 on Koolaid or Country time~ Good luck! i’d definately look for the ragu ones these will come in handy if they go on sale for 98cents again!
