Updates From the Field 7/24

by Christie Bisbee on July 24, 2011

You ever have one of those days that you think maybe you should just go back to bed?

My camera decided to die at the store this morning, I guess it just decided it had had enough of taking pictures of shampoo. Thank goodness for cellphones! My cell was the free one you get when you sign up for a plan so it has very little memory (probably why it’s free). So I had to keep taking a picture, e-mailing it to myself (which took it like 5 minutes) and then deleting it to make more room. Very, very, very slow…Hmmm, might be time for a new phone.

Then I’m told both of my favorite cashiers had today off. And one of the cashiers scheduled to work had called in sick, so only one employee in the store. The front register was broken and it seemed that every smoker in my city had just run out of cigarettes. So the poor guy just had to keep running back and forth.  He just kept calling IC3 (I see more than 3 people in line – help!) but I guess there was no one to help. The poor guy was totally overwhelmed, and obviously not a couponer, but I give him an A+ as he kept very cool in spite of everything and was really doing his best!

Skintimate “Cream Shave”
Woo Hoo! Just like I thought the Skintimate “Cream Shave” works with the in ad coupon! Yippppeee! So you can use the following coupons to get it for $.49 or $.99.  It’s a great product and a great price.

Edge or Skintimate Shave Cream or Gel 6 or 7 oz $1.99 (w/in ad Q)
-$1/1 Skintimate Moisturizing Cream Shave

-$1.50/1 Skintimate Moisturizing Cream Shave
= $.49 or $.99 EACH!

Scunci Hair Elastics
Look out for bonus packs of these. There are B1G1 FREE bonus packs and they are producing the Register Reward so you’ll get both of them for FREE! (Thanks Tom&Sophia Saver)

Glue Sticks & Magic Tape
If you have the pdf coupons for the Glue sticks or the Magic Tape it’s a beeper. Although those coupons aren’t available I know many of you still have them and were hoping to use them this week. Both of them had to be pushed in manually so be aware!

SmartSource Coupons
I tried to test out the SmartSource coupons on the Lumene Face Mask that’s $9.99 but the coupon would just not work. In fact the July coupon book wouldn’t work on it either, even with NO other coupon. It worked before so I have no idea what was going on. With the insanity that was my store I decided I’d go to different store later to try again. If you try any of those please let us know what your experience is!

Find any great deals? Let us know how your shop went? 🙂

Walgreens has an awesome toilet paper deal on Cottonelle 12 packs!! When you buy $10 worth of Cottonelle toilet paper, or 2 $5 12 packs, you get a RR for $3.50. PLUS there was a coupon in last week’s paper for $.75 off of a 12 pack of Cottonelle. Using two of those coupons, you can get 2 Cottonelle 12 pack toilet papers for a total of $5! That’s about $.20 a roll! 🙂

Did anyone try the Dentek flossers? I wasn’t sure if it would work because the ad said flossers and the coupon was for flosser picks.

It did work, no beep’s.

I used the coupon this morning. I’m not sure if it beeped or not but if it did, they pushed it through. Hope this helps!

I used the interenet coupon today for the Dentek and it worked just fine. My coupon said “ANY” Dentek, so I had no problems!

Using a coupon for a product that it is not intended for is coupon fraud so please don’t do it.

Both my favorite cashiers were off today too, and the lady at the photo lab was a little flustered by 9 transactions. The RR for the Irish Spring deoderant and the Wags Perfection tampons werent printing, but the manger handled it just great. She tried to tell me the rules about the RR and why it wouldnt print, until I found my favorite manager, and needless to say, she got schooled in RR. Got a total of $60.83 worth of stuff for $5.97. Not a bad day of shopping!

good job cathy!
i worked the scunci and oral b toothbrush a few times myself, only paying .23 and .36 in tax each time, and receiving back $3 RR for each item each time. (possible due to multiple transactions; i bought 2 scunci’s, got 3RR’s, used those to pay the $3 oop for the 2 oral b toothbrushes…got the 3RR’s from that and bought another 3 scunci’s and so forth. only taxes y’all!

My Walgreens trip today was fairly smooth…my Scotch tape/glue coupons beeped too but they pushed them through manually. My store doesn’t seem to have the Crest Pro Health For Me, so I may try another store later today. My only other tip would be if you are buying the scotch bubble mailers ($.39 with in ad coupon, pretty good filler) look for the ones with a free sample of the Scotch Reusable Strips and a $1 coupon! I saw a little display of the strips in my store for $.99 so after coupon – FREE 🙂 So my filler got me an extra freebie! Happy dance lol.

Oh and one last thing, the Dentek printed coupon worked fine, but my store only got 5 of them total and could only find 3 of them in the stockroom – there was no place for them on the shelf. So you may want to plan your trips with a backup plan in case those are not in stock.

Susan Kraus July 24, 2011 at 1:37 pm

The Crest Pro Health for Me was not with the regular Crest toothpaste. It was under the toothbrushes. It is a kids toothpaste.

Did anyone try the Loreal Eversure, Eversleek or Everstrong deal on the shampoo or conditioner. I know it produces a $3 RR for the treatments? Just wondering if the $3 RR prints for shampoos and conditioners.

Reply

Kelly July 25, 2011 at 11:05 am

My husband bought the L’Oreal Eversleek shampoo and I bought the conditioner and we both got the $3 RR. I can’t wait to try them out 🙂

My catalina machine printed out a 0.50/1 coupon for W Perfection tampons (18-24 count) the first time I had a pack in a transaction and one for $1/1 on the second transaction I bought W tampons. Pretty nice little bonus, since I have seen these for BOGO quite a lot over the past year. Too cool 🙂

Do you guys ever run into this problem in your local store? I’m curious about store policies in other areas…I wanted to get one box of the free tampons and also do the Scunci hair deal. When I get to my store at 10am this morning, the shelves were cleared. I asked the young cashier about the tampons particularly and she just says, “Someone was just in here and bought them all!” Then I turn around and see the lady with the cart behind me has probably 10 packs of the Scunci’s. I’m like, can I just get one please?! Soooo frustrating! Can I do anything thing about this??

Reply

Reena July 24, 2011 at 2:09 pm

Same for me on the w tampons. Who would pass that up? Lol now I gotta run back to get some deodorant and shave gel before the shelf clearers hit the store. So bye bye for now! Lol all in all a great walgreens day

Anyone else out there have problems with the shelves being cleared out on some of these deals where no coupon is needed? Ie. the Scunci or tampon deal
I got to my store at 10am, found the tampon shelf empty and asked the cashier if they had any. She said, “Someone was just in here and bought them all.” I turn around behind me and a lady had like 10 packs of the Scunci hair bands in her cart. Aren’t there limits on these items? I mean, can’t I get just one?!
Don’t managers enforce the limitations placed in the ads?!

Anna July 24, 2011 at 4:37 pm

I had a tough time finding the Dentex flossers – none at 2 stores (not even a peg for them). Found them at the last store and just bought one without a coupon since I didn’t have it. Also, the Lumene face mask is a tough one – the manufacturer coupon works but the coupon in the July book didn’t. They price adjusted the Lumene (to $5.99) and applied the $4 manufacturer coupon. Also, my magic tape coupons didn’t beep but the Scotch glue stick coupons did. Today was not the best Walgreens day for me, either. Aw well, maybe next week. 🙂

Reply

lindal5 July 24, 2011 at 4:59 pm

I bought the Scotch Magic Tape and my coupons went through fine (no beep), but the glue Stick coupon did beep so cashier forced it through. Free Tape and Free Glue Sticks! Plus I bought 4 Pure Silk Shave Gel for $.19 each. Great deals today and the store was well stocked!

Reply

Ashley July 24, 2011 at 9:20 pm

I couldn’t find the flossers either. I had to ask cosmetics lady who had to call over the manager. He found them in the ‘clearance’ aisle! A few minutes before that I had actually skimmed over the stuff in that area just to see if there were any good deals (NONE) and didn’t notice them.

Reply

Vonavie July 24, 2011 at 4:45 pm

FYI, the DenTek RR was for some weird long skinning thing that had disposable ends, NOT for the standard floss picks that our family likes. 🙁 Had to have them do a return for me when my RR didn’t print. I hate when that happens.

Marie July 24, 2011 at 4:58 pm

I keep confusing myself. Do I want to use the 1.50/1 Skintimate IP first then the in ad coupon, or the other way around?

Reply

lindal5 July 24, 2011 at 5:01 pm

Use the in-ad Q first, so it rings at $1.99, and then hand the cashier the $1.50 Q. You will only pay $.49 per shave cream.

Hi Christie,

I love your site, but I’ve had it with Walgreens! Over the last few months I’ve been shopping there less and less. Between the system never working when they scan the coupons and negative comments or gestures from cashiers I’m pretty much done. For a company that has a culture of coupons, I really don’t understand what the problem is? I don’t even do multiple transactions. My latest trip was with the Lumene coupons. I got the special coupon that was out today, plus the monthly booklet coupon and a manufacturer’s coupon. The first Walgreens I went to had to ask how to process the coupon of course they weren’t scanning (The Walgreens coupons)!
Then she told me I could only use one manufacturers coupon, because of a .02 cent difference. I then told her she should adjust the coupon down. She then agreed she could do this. What is the DEAL there? Do they just try to see how far they can push there customers? I left without the purchase- which by the way would have been free. I tried one other Walgreens and was told by the supervisor they don’t take more coupons than items- even Walgreens coupons. It is INSANITY trying to shop there. I asked her if there was a Corporate coupon policy change. I left again with the corporate number. It seems really ridiculous to me to waste my time and aggravate myself to make a purchase that CVS is paying me to make (they have a $5 EB with a $20.00 purchase. With Walmart’s price match policy and CVS’s excellent customer service I won’t be back. The reason I’m emailing you is to see if it is even worthwhile to contact corporate? There seems to be a culture of disregard for their customer’s since it is so wide-spread. I will keep visiting your site and price-matching everywhere else! Thanks for all you do! Your advice is greatly appreciated.

Reply

Christie July 25, 2011 at 2:06 am

So sorry for all the issues you have been having. 🙁 I would certainly call and complain and if you used to have prescriptions filled there I’d let them know that you moved those too! Glad I can help you with the price matching though! 🙂

Susan July 24, 2011 at 9:41 pm

Julie ~ I can completely relate. I didn’t have bad luck today with coupons not scanning. I went to 3 different Walgreens. I only did one transaction at each. I didn’t buy very much at any of them. I am not a shelf clearer. I spent about $15 total and ended up with $7 RR more than I started. My first 2 were great. The last one I had a very sour cashier. No smiles even though I am very friendly.

At first it bothered me, but after I thought about it, it didn’t. My first 2 cashiers were super nice and friendly.

And I would contact corporate if I were you. They need to know.

Don’t let one bad day spoil your fun.

Sheila July 24, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Julie, I also can completely relate. A few months ago i had been treated badly by a couple of cashiers myself and a manager, so i emailed corporate, the main manager called me and spoke to me she seemed very eager to help and resolve the situation, and because of that conversation when i get a difficult cashier that tries to tell me that i cant do something that i know i can do i always just say well i guess we need to get ahold of — my managers name and they quickly change their attitude. Also at my wags the deals and RR start at midnight saturday so i always stay up and go then, last night when i went in after i was done and got in line there was a fellow couponer ahead of me, the cashier was sooo rude to her telling her how he hated RR and the whole couponing thing was just ridiculous and how they dont pay him enough to deal with all of that, she just put her head down so i HAD to speak up, i told him that i LOVED RR and if it werent for coupons and RR i wouldnt shop there, and i also proceeded to tell her to email corporate and let them know about her experience and that — would contact her within a day or two, needless to say mr. cashier man changed his attitude! Good Luck!

Hi Sheila,

Good for you! I’m glad you said something. Realistically with Walgreens prices- most people would not shop there without using coupons or register reward deals. Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m going to call corporate today as Christie suggested.

Thanks, Floppy Elephant. I will try another store.

Do you happen to remember if the UPC was different on your coupon? My coupon printed with only one UPC, it has the databar with 7 numbers on top then a dash and then another 6 numbers (are there only supposed to be 12 digits?). It doesn’t have the standard UPC on it, but does have a QR code. I printed it right from SmartSource so I’m confused why it didn’t work.

I tried this today and it wouldn’t scan with the new bar code and would not enter as just the numbers either. Manager had no clue about the new bar codes. I thought the new scanner were for this, but NO! I printed some info on this and will take it with me and try again at another store also.

It was an interesting day for me. I’ve only been go to CVS and Walgreens doing some of the deals that are posted here. I had all my coupons in order. The glue sticks didn’t scan but she put them through. I got my 1st transaction down to 1.87 and I go to pay and there is no wallet. CRAP I tell the cashier I left it out in the car and asked if she could suspend the transaction she points to the line that formed behind after I had made it up there. I said I don’t have the money, it is in the car. So she cashes it out and said I would have to have that amount when I came in. I go out and I’m back in 30 seconds later. I go to the end of the line and I get up there and pay her the 1.87 and then have her do the seconds transaction. That went better. But I still have trouble with RR. I got lots of free things and other things really cheap so all in all it was a good day

I love youre site. I’m just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I was told by my local Walgreen’s that I can only use 3 coupons per transaction. That makes it very difficult for me to shop there because I pretty much use a coupon for EVERYTHING I purchase (I drive my sister’s nuts!!! If you don’t have a coupon then don’t even talk to me about buying something/anything :-). I guess I should look up their coupon policy, print it and take it w/me when I shop there??? Or maybe I’ll try the next closest Walgreens and see how it goes there???

Christie July 26, 2011 at 12:16 am

Dealing with Cashiers and Managers can be very trying. I am very lucky to have an excellent Wags staff. While they do not always carry the items I am looking for, the extra steps the Cashiers and Managers take to accommodate me is what keeps me coming back. When I walk through the door on Sundays, they want to know what deals I am getting today and they go out of their way to help me locate what I need. Because they know I will be doing multiple transactions, they always open up another register (usually in cosmetics)

I am sorry to hear that some of your experiences are less than pleasant (I seem to have all my trouble at local Walmarts).

Lianne July 25, 2011 at 2:20 pm

I went in yesterday and got the Oral-B indicators and the dentek flossers. No Scunci’s left. I didn’t have my irish spring coupons with me so Im going to drop by another store this afternoon with them and check for the Scunci’s too.
I do have a question though about the tampons–I couldn’t find them! But not because they were cleared out–I couldn’t even find the tag on the shelf anywhere–do they keep the 8-packs somewhere else or does that particular store just not stock them?

Reply

Alison July 25, 2011 at 4:11 pm

wow! I think EVERYWHERE is having a problem with shelf clearers! When i tell people i have to limit stuff they want to start arguing and screaming at me. I wonder why they aren’t nice like my other wonderful couponing customers! And some people just don’t seem to understand RRs and say its useless. I tell everyone to each their own. If you shop at walgreens all the time it benefits you.

What is this deal everyone keeps talking about with Dentek?

Reply

Lianne July 25, 2011 at 7:06 pm

Interestingly enough I have this problem in more affluent areas. I live in a suburb near a medium sized capital city–the Walgreens at the suburban stores are always cleared very early. The ones in the more inner-city areas usually have stock…especially at this one Wags I found that doesn’t put sale stickers on the aisles! I was there today and did the scunci and irish spring deals today (just once!) and neither of those things were even labeled as on sale-let alone the RR. So the people in that store don’t have any idea if they don’t stick to the flyer.

Reply

Victoria K. July 25, 2011 at 10:13 pm

Lianne,
I agree there are over 10 wags in my area. I go to probably one of the busier ones. On Sunday at 10:30 a.m. they were so busy and understaffed that the sales weren’t labeled with the RR. I had no problem finding what I needed. I always go to either photo or comestics to check out with no problems.

Reply

Maria July 25, 2011 at 10:08 pm

At my local Walgreens I purchased two Scunci’s and to my surprise they rang up for .99 each and still kicked out a $3.00 RR.

Glue Sticks, so far I have collected 12 of them and they all beeped, but my stores love me (I think cause they know I comment on tellwag.com) and they manually punched it in. Got them all for $0.50. I always use my MQ’s first then my store Q’s.
