It’s Been a Sad, Sad Day…

by Christie Bisbee on August 26, 2011

UPDATE – I can’t thank you enough for your understanding, your kind words and your prayers. It means so much to me and it helps me feel a little less alone right now. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

The past 24 hours have been very sad for me and my family. We lost one of our beloved pets and needless to say, we are all heartbroken.

Our cat Wicket would have been 7 next week. I found him and his brother Benny as kittens dumped at the entrance of our community. They had been abandoned in a cardboard box right on the side of a normally very busy road. I’m convinced that they only made it because I found them very early in the morning, probably just minutes after they were dumped.

Wicket was a wonderful and gentle cat, really just the perfect kitty.  It wasn’t until years later we learned that he had been born with a birth defect that made for some pretty useless kidneys. We did all we could for the little guy but sadly love and modern medicine still weren’t enough. He lived a happy life, full of love and was a fighter right till the end.

So please forgive me but you probably won’t see quite as much of me as you are accustomed to this weekend. I’m finding it very hard to concentrate and focus on much of anything. I’ll still be around, just not posting as much as I normally do. I hope that you will understand.

No matter how much you think you are ready, it’s always hard to say goodbye to a pet you loved so much. Wicket will be very, very missed.

The most difficult loss was Dj who was a cat that looked very much liked Wicket, and also died too early becaue of kidney isses. He was amazing, just like I am sure Wicket was. It’s okay to need some time to mourn. Wicket really was a member of the family. He was very much loved, and very lucky kitty for being with you.

Awww I’m so sorry! I just recently came home to find my 11 year old kitty had passed away sometime that day while I was at work. It’s shocking when they’re young, and so heartbreaking! He looked a lot like Wicket, just shades of grey. He was my cuddler.

Everyone told me it would get easier. And it does. It’s just hard to get past the stage of feeling devastated. These little sweet kitties steal our hearts in so many different little ways.

Something that helped me after loosing him was a memory that came to my head. He’d always greet me with a kiss when I came home. He’d lean in, close his eyes and we’d touch noses. Somehow when I’d go back to remembering finding him that day, the image of his sweet face coming in for a nose kiss came to mind….and every time I was feeling so sad that image would return…like a little bit of comfort. Almost like it was him saying “I miss you too”. Maybe you have one of those images too to help you.

I’m so so sorry for your loss.

2 weeks ago we lost our cockapoo suddenly and totally unexpected. Even with two others the house is way too quiet and we just feel lost.
How blessed your little one was to have had you to find him and love him for as long as you did. About 3 years ago someone dumped a kitten in front of my work-a busy street not far from O’Hare-lots of traffic. I took him home and sadly he only lived 6 months but he was growing into such a loving beautiful young cat.

I completely understand how you feel. On Tuesday my oldest son was picking on our dog (we have had him for 7 years) and our dog got mad and bit his lip. We had to take our son to get stitches to re-align his lip. My husband decided to put the dog down since he bit one of the boys. It’s so hard to have lost an animal no matter how it happens! 🙁

So Sorry to hear about your cat. We just had to take our cat to the vet and he has an infection in his teeth that will keep spreading….So at least for today he just needs 8 pulled. I can’t bear to loose my cat. Not sure what I will do when….

Reply

Betsy August 26, 2011 at 5:39 pm

Allison,

Our kitty had 7 back teeth pulled 2 months ago (1 tooth had already fallen out). I was amazed her teeth were so bad; she’s only 5 years old. So far she has recovered well, and seems healthy. She was diagnosed with pancreatitis when she was 3, but now I’m wondering if it really was her rotten teeth. Can’t imagine losing her; she’s such a sweet baby!
Hope your kitty gets better soon! It’s hard when they’re sick.
Please reply if you’d like to compare notes. I would be interested in how your cat is doing and what the vet recommends.

I’m so, so sorry to hear about the loss to you and your family. Wicket sounds like he was really loved, and I’m sure he knew that.

We lost our 18-year-old Norwegian Forest Cat this spring, and the pain is still quite fresh. It sounds silly, but the next time one of the free photobook offers rolled around, I put together a memorial book of all my favorite photos of her. It’s helped with our family’s grieving process quite a bit.

Take care of each other, and let your other pets snuggle you tonight. *hugs*

Tribute To A Best Friend

Sunlight streams through window pane
unto a spot on the floor….
then I remember,
it’s where you used to lie,
but now you are no more.
Our feet walk down a hall of carpet,
and muted echoes sound….
then I remember,
It’s where your paws would joyously abound.
A voice is heard along the road,
and up beyond the hill,
then I remember it can’t be yours….
your golden voice is still.
But I’ll take that vacant spot of floor
and empty muted hall
and lay them with the absent voice
and unused dish along the wall.
I’ll wrap these treasured memorials
in a blanket of my love
and keep them for my best friend
until we meet above.

Christie,

I am so terribly sorry for you loss. I feel your heartache! I have 3 doggies and love them dearly. I dread the day I loose one. They are all on medication–thyroid issues, allergies and my little boy is blind and on daily eye drops.

I will keep you in my prayers. Know that there is a special place in heaven for our little ones and we will be reunited with them when we arrive!

There are those who say animals do not go to heaven.
But I am here to tell you they do. How could heaven be paradise without the love of a cat or dog? I know that when I think of my son in heaven (way too early) I know that he has found a stray cat to love. He brought enough of them home while he was alive. Maybe Wicket will wander his way.

I wish you peace at this difficult time.

It is always hard and sad to lose a member of the family and there is never anything anyone can say to make it hurt less. Just remember a couple of things as time goes on…first, you gave him a wonderful life full of love and happiness that he returned to your life in more ways than you could probably ever express. And second, when you are ready, there is always another animal that would love to be part of your family and give you their unconditional love.

I am so sorry for your loss I totally understand you grief as I lost my male cat 2 years ago. They are a very large part of the family some people just don’t understand the love between pet and onwer but I certainly do. I have 12 cats all strays from around my neighborhood and I love each and everyone of them. This is what I have on my facebook page and it is so true. “Until one has loved an animal, part of their soul remains un-awakened.” Your wicket will still be around you trust me sometime you may be sitting at your computer and feel something rub your legs and nothing is there that will be him letting you know he is still with you. My thoughts are with you.

I’m just heartbroken for you and your family. Pets are truly family members and losing them is no less painful than losing another family member. Don’t give us a second thought – take care of yourself and your family’s needs. He was absolutely beautiful, and you were an angel to find him and his litter mates and rescue them.

A side note: My cousin lost her dog two days ago and the way she had come into their lives is they had found her along side of the road as well.

Sending you and your family healing thoughts. I’m sure your kitty is close by and trying to comfort you all from the other side. OK! I’m in tears. Ending this now.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can relate very well to losing a pet. Many of them come and go in our lives but there are some who leave a terrible hole in your heart. Sounds like little Wicket was one of those. He will be waiting for you … Try to focus on the good times you had and just how much pleasure and company he gave you. He was a lucky guy to have found someone who cared so for him. There are so many who don’t have that luxery.

Christie, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It stirs some emotions for myself, as my 5 year old cat name Storm had the same issues and battled strong for the last two years of his life. Sometimes losing a family pet can and will be the same amount of pain as losing a human loved one. You are in our thoughts and minds as you mourn the loss of your furry friend. Time will heal, and don’t worry about us, we will survive for a while. God bless you and your family.

Chritie, I feel your loss & my husband who isn’t a wild for wags fan is sad. I ALSO 3 YEARS AGO PICKED UP 5 CATS WITH UMBILICUS AND BLOODY WET BIRTHING MATTER IN A DITCH. The outcome was great, even though the vet taught me & told me I would never be able to keep 5 alive with every 2 hr feeds. I did….1 is deformed as her tail grows back into her tail and she weighs as an adult 5#’s, I gave away thanks to vets office 3, and the male cat I kept also. HIS NAME IS TANNER, HE HAS A DISLOCATED SHOULDER AND KIDNEY DISEASE. I spend $ every month for cosequin injectable anti-inflamatory for cannine, and because I have reached 4 cats, Tanner is on a urinary/kidney control diet that costs $54.00 for 1 month. He alsmost died several times from obstructions due to over the counter cat food. Females have bigger ureters, males are small, and the most common death in male cats.
