Walgreens: Updates From The Field 3/18

by Christie Bisbee on March 18, 2012

Here’s an update from my trip today to help your trip go smoother!

ACAI BERRY CLEANSE: There were apology signs on the Acai Berry Cleanse today at my store. Apparently they didn’t get the double pack and were substituting this single Acai Berry Cleanse 14 day box. These rang up $10 and printed the $10 Register Reward.

Also, I found a coupon book inside the box that included a $1/1 coupon for the Acai Berry Cleanse, making your second box a $1 money maker!

Also, if you bought the Applied Nutrition Easy Absorb Calcium a few months ago, I found the same coupon booklet in there too.

CAREFREE & REACH: Both of these coupons beeped for me. I was at a store with the old registers so I don’t know if they’ll beep on the new registers. I expected the Carefree to beep but not the Reach.

GENERAL MILLS CEREAL: Cookie Crisp and a variety of Cheerios are included in the $1.99 price, which makes for an awesome deal on cereal, especially for the Cookie Crisp.

***DEAL IDEA***
Buy Cookie Crisp $1.99
75ยข off when you buy ONE BOX Cookie Crispยฎ cereal
= $1.24 EACH

Buy (2) Cheerios (Original, Multi-grain, Honey Nut, Banana Nut) $1.99

Buy (3) Cinnamon Toast Crunch $1.99

ADVIL PM 4ct: The Advil PM 4ct isn’t included in the trial size Register Reward offer but you may want to check your store for clearance. Some stores have them on clearance for just .74 each, making them FREE after the coupon. (Thanks Frugal Finders!)

***DEAL IDEA***
Buy (1) Advil PM 4ct $.74
$1.00 on ANY Advil PM 4ct. or larger
= FREE!

If your store won’t adjust them down (which is the Walgreens Corporate coupon policy) you can buy (3) and use (2) coupons which will make it .07 each.

(2) – $1.00 on ANY Advil PM 4ct. or larger

Both carefree an reach were on sale for .99 so both would have to mark down .99 also for those trying to buy the tooth brushes the crystal clear isn’t included. ๐Ÿ™

All my store had was Crystal Clear. In fact, the manager was working on rearranging that section of the store when I asked where they were. He handed me one and said it was part of the deal. The in ad coupon applied properly.

The crystal clear is clearly advertised as the item on sale in the weekly flyer. ๐Ÿ˜€

I found Stayfree pads 16 count on clearance for $0.95, so I got two packs free with the $2/2 coupon that was in today’s SmartSource insert. Score!

The ones I found on clearance for $0.95 were the 24 ct packages, they even had the packages with bonus 24 + 8 at the same clearance price!!

The Walgreens coupon for the Reach toothbrush says for the Reach Prevent Toothbrush. The only Reach Prevent Toothbrushes I could find at my store were called Reach Prevent Crystal Clean on the tag and only said Crystal Clean on the package. I did not try the deal since the mq excludes Crystal Clean. Stocked up on almonds and Puffs Plus though.

Just to be clear – I was talking about the Reach $1/1 Any Floss, not the toothbrush coupon.

I found Tampax pearl tampons 40 ct on clearance for $3.49 and use $1/1 coupon that was a great price in my opinion sad part was they only had 2 boxes but it was better than none.

Reach was a no go for me because of the exclusion of crystal clean

She doesnt mean the reach toothbrushes, she means the reach floss which also has a $1 off coupon and its on sale for $.99

I snagged a Sally Hansen Salon Effects on clearance for $4 for $2 (after the $2/1 coupon from March All You), along with 2 free bags of Easter M&M’s, and a Schick Hydro razor for $1.99! (Used a $4/1 coupon and previous RR.) Good day for me! My favorite cashier even took off my Mars coupon post-transaction when I realized it was missing fromy my receipt (I had dropped it on the floor. oops!).

The store i went to has the new registers. The carefree beeped on me and the cashier didn’t want to manually ring up the coupon to .99, so i just used my coupons at CVS where they’re priced for $1 ea.

Marianne March 18, 2012 at 8:45 pm

I also got the Carefree at CVS to avoid any hassles.

Same thing happened to me at Wags with the new registers and it beeped. Just went to CVS and they scanned perfectly…..

I really enjoy reading your “from the field” post. It really help me prepare for my trip. The reach floss coupon did beep for me too, but the cashier pushed it through.

The carefree beeped at the store with the new registers where the manager and the clerk then told me they couldn’t reduce down the coupon even though I pointed out that it is thier policy to do so.Corporate and district got a letter from me today about it.The carefree deal is posted in thier ad as being free when you use the manufacture q as I pointed out to them but apparantly honoring thier own sales ad is a bit too difficult for them.I do believe that walmart sells these usually for .97 cents so it would be .03 cents overage there for anyone wishing to avoid the hassle of walgreens ignoring its ads and making up policy as they go along.

Reply

Kahla March 18, 2012 at 11:30 pm

I went to Walmart earlier and they had the carefree for .94 cents. I paid .01 for 4 of them at a time. (Becuase the coupon stated limit four per trans.) =)

I had the same experience, but on the old registers. It beeped, cashier handed me the coupon and said “too bad” (literally) and I pointed out he needed to adjust it down per their policy and he said “no way, can’t do that”. I then pulled out their ad w/it clearly shown and he just shrugged. I gave him the pads back and went to Riteaid w/the coupon to get it free. During the transaction, the boy clerk also looked me in the eye and said “I hate coupons, if you can’t afford to buy it without a coupon, you shouldn’t be here.” (I had 4 whole coupons). He made me feel like crap and I wanted to scream at him that many families survive on coupons…or would he rather smell everyone who can’t buy soap otherwise?

i’m attempting to get back into walgreens. normally i only shop CVs. today i remembered why…… I went in to buy the reach toothbrushes and floss. i wasn’t positive about the toothbrushes. the crystal clean was the same price as another one, so i figured i’d try it out. i asked the cashier, she tried, it beeped, so i said nevermind. next came the floss. I was trying to buy three. the cashier seemed new, but was super nice. the register beeped and she asked someone for help. i told her the coupon would have to be marked down. she then got a manager. the manager tried, it beeped and she said she couldn’t lower the coupon value. I then said that their policy says that they can. She gave me a bad look and said, “well, do you have the policy?” i said “actually i do!” i whipped it out, showed it to her, and she did it. such a hassel for a little floss. gees, i only want it to donate to help people. man do i hate walgreens! ( i love your site though!! thanks for all you do)

In Houston TX the RR is not printing for the Acai; the store had a pre-printed letter apologizing for the RR that didn’t print and offering me a mail-in refund. They also provided a stamped envelope for the mail-in refund. Anyone else encounter this?

Reply

Kathy March 18, 2012 at 9:55 pm

Two weeks ago one of my stores was unable to print my RR for the Colgate atoothpaste. I had to mail in a form they gave to me and got it back quickly with my RR and their expiration was more than the typical 2 weeks. I was a little skeptical but it worked like a charm.

I wonder what the “success rate” of people coming in trying to get the Carefree is going to be…I’m guessing somewhere on the order of 20%. And 9/10 of those will have to call the manager and pull out the coupon policy and go through a whole bunch of hassle. So. Freaking. Unbelievable. Sometimes I just want to scream “Train your people Walgreens, cashiers and managers alike!” And PLEASE get someone to double…even triple check the ads before printing. The amount of misprints/mistakes/errors and “unavailability” of sale items (especially free after register reward items) recently is completely out of control. I hate to be so negative on Wags, it’s just hard when I put so much time and effort into planning my trips and couponing in general and then I just hit barrier after barrier…aka untrained cashier after untrained cashier after untrained manager after incompetent manager after poorly executed distribution system after shoddy error checking after….you get my point ๐Ÿ˜‰

Reply

Guest March 18, 2012 at 9:51 pm

@Jen I completely agree with you on everything! I work at Walgreens and totally understand you. I can’t believe all the ad errors recently – it’s crazy! The thing about cashiers not getting trained though – i don’t think it’s that. Most of them just simply don’t care. They don’t WANT to care so they call a manager and just forget about it. Couponers know to check out with me when they shop because I understand everything ๐Ÿ˜‰

Awesome day for me, $210. in product, $16. oop. Bought the Acai cleanse, no problem, 20 bags of chex mix, and a long list of items. My store is in Clermont, FL on Hwy 27. All of the cashiers and managers are polite and friendly, they have always adjusted coupons for me. The product is always stocked and they always ask if they can help me find an item. The young blonde girl usually working the cosmetic register on Sundays is always smiling and bubble-y. I’ve shooped many Walgreens and this store is awesome. ๐Ÿ˜€ Lucky me!

WOW, at my store they watch for the amount of deals we get so we don’t clear the shelves. They allow only the limit that is printed in the paper, however we are allowed to come back on Saturday morning and buy what is left over. Looks like you are an extreme coupon shopper…and your store must have great stock.

My store was completely stocked as well when I went in today! The manager said she gets alot of couponers there so she makes sure to stock up on items that are going to be free or close to it that way she doesnt have to worry about limiting the items.

The Acai double pack (as pictured in the ad) was available at my store, but it rang up at $14.99 and did not produce a RR. I brought it to cashier’s attention and showed him the ad so he adjusted the price to $10. Then a store manager had to ring up the Acai cleanse 14 day pack in a separate transaction to produce the RR and then voided that sale. She gave me a lot of grief so I don’t know if I’ll repeat the deal later this week as originally planned. I’m very disappointed that I had to deal with yet another attitude from an assistant manager.

Reply

Guest March 18, 2012 at 9:52 pm

The 2 pack in stores is still not the one advertised in the ad. The ad advertises a 2pack of 56ct each, whereas the one in store is either two 14cts or one 14ct/one 56 ct.

The Walgreens ads are put together and printed several months in advance. Also, the same ad is printed for a large area, such as most of south east and south west florida get the same ad but not all of the stores get the same products, there are over 600 Walgreens in Florida alone so there are probably about 300 stores in all of the south Florida regions that gets the exact same ad. My store does NOT have a problem with couponers at all. We just really really politely ask that you please please go to cosmetics. If you don’t see an employee that is free to ring you up, PLEASE ask the front cashier to PLEASE call someone for you. I have no idea how to put that any other way. I work Sunday mornings at my store and it never fails, I get a few couponers in my line through out the day and the ONLY reason why I don’t like doing it is because I never have enough time to fully work out all the problems up there. If I’m in cosmetics, I will GLADLY spend 30 plus minutes of my time to work out all the hijinks so that you are happy. I once spent an hour with one customer. She had a ton of coupons and had to do a ton of different transactions. I didn’t mind it, I didn’t have to worry about getting a line of customers. And my store has the new registers and we are the first store in my district to have them so I have no idea if the coupon problem can be fixed. The problem?? If we have to “mark down a coupon”, it MUST MUST MUST be done at the end. If we do it in the middle of the transaction, we’re no longer able to go back and add more products or more coupons. I found that out the hard way today. And after the customer left, I found out why it didn’t even work……. She used the reach toothbrush coupon that excludes the crystal clear brushes on the crystal clear coupons. If I had caught it while I was ready to pull my hair out because I was so frustrated, I would have told her to get other toothbrushes and/or I couldn’t use the coupons. But I was in a hurry because she was getting over $25 worth of stuff and was expecting to pay only $3. I was frustrated because I am still learning how to use the new registers (I used the old ones for 9 years) and there were customers lining up behind her and I had to call a manager over to void the entire thing off because after I hard keyed the coupons, she hands me some register rewards and oh look, the back button is suddenly gone now. Then I had to ask the manager go over on the other register to ring up the other people so that I could rering the lady up. We’ve only had the new registers for 5 days and I had had like 6 hours total time using them on Wednesday and Thursday and was off work Friday and Saturday. Today was very frustrating.

Christie March 18, 2012 at 11:18 pm

Thank you for letting us know why there is an issue with adjusting coupons down. As a former retail manger, I know how few payroll hours are allocated to stores and how employees must maximize their productivity. i.e. move the line. Going forward, If I have a coupon that needs adjusting down I will save it till the end, and if I have more than 1, I will do multiple transactions. Again, Thank you for all you & your co-workers do!

anne March 19, 2012 at 1:41 am

See, when explained most people get it. Communication is key, as always. I bet your day would be less frustrating if you remembered to asked at the beginning of the order if there are going to be any pesky coupons that need adjusting. If so, can we do those at the end of your order? That would help everyone. You just shared so much helpful information for everyone. I hope you got a footrub at the end of your icky day.

Reply

Brenda March 19, 2012 at 2:56 am

it is so nice to hear from employees, and yes communications is key. I have been couponing since Jan last year and it took a lot of effort on my part to have the employees change their thinking about coupons. After talking with the manager manytimes and complaining about their rude behavior, I can gladly say I now love my Wallgreens. I do feel for you and your frustration and would only suggest to the customer to be nice to the employees…keep smiling and help them along with your multiple transactions. Most are really trying and kind words go along way. However, those who are down right nasty saying things like “I can’t give this to you for free” or , “that’s just not right, we are losing money on you” should get reported. Good job to you for trying your best!

This may be a good opportunity to educate the cashiers and managers at Walgreen’s on their coupon policy since the add specifically shows on the carefree that the price is $0.99 and the coupon at $0.99 even though it is a $1 coupon in the paper. If nothing else this should show them that they can be adjusted. My Walgreen’s accepted the coupon with no problem they actually said they are not supposed to adjust them down with the new system and entered them in at $1 off. I have also found a sneaky way to get them to accept coupons that at first they refuse to help with…..When the manager refused I told him “That’s okay just go ahead and void the transaction and I will come back when the manger that understands the coupon policy is here”. Instead of having to admit he didn’t know the policy he said “I will do it for you this one time”. He must have read up on the policy after that because he is one of the best managers at accepting coupons now.

Carefree beeped on the new register. I told the cashier what the problem was and she manually did the 99 cents. All total, I spent $15.50, but will be getting a mail in rebate for the Neosporin for 12.99. Pretty good haul. 2 Carefree, Acai Berry, 4 mars, 2 Bayer aspirin, Scott paper towels and neosporin.

Anonymous Employee March 19, 2012 at 1:39 am

With new registers, we’re actually manually entering in a price and when our coupon sheets prints at the end of the night, it’s a list of every coupon. The ones that get hard keyed show up as blank and so we have to play a guessing game as to what it’s for. There is a way to modify a coupon to the “correct price” which if there was, it’d be great. That being said, filler items do prevent the need for marking coupons down usually. All last week we were selling 20oz cokes with .49 Reese’s and there was a coupon for the two that took .50 off the Reese’s so we scanned it and it’d take off that extra penny too. So if you get a nice cashier and all your items do match your coupons then you shouldn’t even need to alter the price of the coupon. I have only done it a few times when the customer is being rude to me.

Reply

Anonymous Employee March 19, 2012 at 1:43 am

And PS managers can change a sale price to reflect what is in the ad. Like the two pack of Acari that rang up at 14.99, a manager can put it in for $10, they just can not activate the RRs. But it’s not something they know about as a problem til about Monday morning. My fiancรฉ had to do it with milk when we switched vendors. The sale price was for borders milk but we carry mcarthur now so he had to go in and manually change the price on the milk so that it can ring up right.

Well I had a huge problem Sunday with a store that is typically great. In clearance they had Glade scented oil candles on clearance for .99- I had the Glade coupon for $2/2 4 oz OR Scented oil candles. I grabbed all 16 of the clearance items, and when I got to cosmetics, I TOLD the cashier these would have to be adjusted. She rang the candles through along with my other three items. She then took the $2 off coupons and my RRs, and rang the coupons through for $2, and did not adjust. In fact, she rang 7 of the $2 coupons, and I heard the register beep, she hit a key, and took off the (3) $2 rr that I was using- and acted like they all went through.

My total was $8.65- and i knew that was too high. I asked her if she adjusted my coupon and she said she didn’t need to -everything went through. I paid, and said I would double check the transaction. She waited on other customers, and I looked over my receipt. She rang through 7 of my Glade coupons, but NOT the 8th one. I went back and pointed this out- and she refused to address the problem. I called a manager and explained to him that my OOP was too high, as I gave 8 coupons- and only 7 were used because she did not adjust down the Glad coupons by .02. He clearly did not get it- and ended up saying ot me “I will give you back one of your $2 coupons.”

I haven’t had a manager use that approach and started laughing- and explained that the coupon he was “giving me back” was never used to begin with- that it in fact needed to be adjusted to take off my total, and I would like the transaction re-rung. he literally shook his head and said “All I am going to do for you is give you the $2 coupon back.” – I pulled out my coupon policy and READ to him where it says it should be adjusted down- but he would NOT do it. I left the store, came back in, returned 2 of the candles, and got back my $2.14. I then called corporate and asked for the DISTRICT manager- NOT the store manager- to call me back, and he did today! (Sunday!) I explained what happened, and he says he will go over and educate the assistant manager who “helped ” me.

I just get incredibly frustrated with the fact that these cashiers and managers do not know their coupon policy. I am sorry, but years ago I DID work at Walgreens, and I knew my coupon policy- every retail store I have worked at I have mad a point of it because it’s my job to do so. SO it gets old hearing how they don’t know- if i can read it, so can they! Adjusting a coupon wouldn’t have to be done to begin with, quite frankly, if Walgreens just gave overage- and before everyone jumps on the bandwagon, Walgreens sends these coupons in and gets reimbursed FULL price- as an ex employee I know that for a FACT. So when I get something for .99- they make 1 cent off me- that isn’t much for me- but you add that up over thousands of stores nationwide, and then tell me they don’t make money off couponers! My cosmetic girl also told me she makes a commission off some of the Saturdate sales, and they also have to ring through so many sales thru cosmetics as well. I love Walgreens, but quite honestly- Walmart, target and CVS hassle me a whole lot LESS!!

Reply

Anonymous Employee March 19, 2012 at 11:56 am

The only time I’ve ever said no or we can’t do this many transactions or you can’t buy that many of those things or anything regarding NO is when I know the people and also know that they return the items later on without their receipt. There’s this one family that used to shop at my old store and did the old mail in rebate things in the easy saver catalogs and would ALWAYS return the items two months later. By that time, they had gotten their rebates and they’d hope that we’d forget what was on rebate two months prior…. (they’d return january items in March). It was so “bad” that I started keeping the old ads and the old easy saver catalogs in cosmetics so that as soon as they came up I could show them that we couldn’t do their refund because those items were free after rebate two months ago. Now they try it with the free after register reward items. I still see them a few times in my current store shopping. I’m super nice and paitent when I’m pretty sure you’re not like that. lol.

I had an EXPERIENCE at walgreens today…..
I found all the products except for the floss.. which didn’t matter because I didn’t get the coupon in Northern Cali any way.. So i went up bought the Acai & 7 Degree Travel Size Deodorants which were marked as apart of the deal.. & the ALL.
I only got 11.00 in RR.. Later as I am driving home I figured out why I was over a little… I didn’t get the 2RR for the travel products.. Luckliy there was another store on my way home.. So I stopped took the products in and explained my situation about the RR. I was told by the manager that I could option A go back to the store I got it at and take it up with them or return the products and GET BACK 2.00 LESS then what I paid because they had no way to know if I got the REWARDS???? This is there policy he said. Its not his money or his fault!
No way I was driving back.. the original store was clear across town & at least 30 minutes from my house..
I called corporate and filed a compliant.. that makes no sense that they would actually keep my money for not giving me my RR!!!
IS this typical or LEGAL???

I’ll guess all couponers have gone through various disappointments on this couponing business. I know there are may “HATERS” (cashiers & managers) that as soon as they see us they start rolling their eyes. With time I have learn to keep my composture (“my god it is not easy). I am the person that does not waste my time to argue I called corporate so they start getting their act together. Yes, I am very hated among a few but with time I have made nice relations with some of them. I give them products, (of course the ones I get free at the store) coupons or advice on the week specials.

If I know a coupon is going to give me a hard time (adjust the price) the first thing I tell the cashier is to call the assistant manager because they have to wait for their approval and I do not want to hold the line. I do not why it happens I guess they are playing it safe. I let the other clients do their transactions while I wait for the manager to get there. I do my transactions at cosmetics because I do various transactions and usually there is no one waiting. If another client show us I stop my other transactions and let them do theirs (been polite to others). Those nice cashiers even open the other register because they know I take long. This takes time to get trust among them some of them even joke with me. They have learn that I am a serious couponer that I do not buy stuff to return it like someone stated before. I have seen people returning items that had RR and I told them right away that is not fair because it puts us always in the position as been “robbers” and not couponers that want to save money. By comments like this I have been getting a better reputation and when i have problems they are willing to help without questioning so much as they did in the past.

The morale is if you want to keep couponing this takes time and start setting good relations. Have a good one everyone…
