Walgreens Shopping Scenario 8/21

by Christie Bisbee on August 20, 2011

Here is my Walgreens Shopping Scenario for 8/14. In this scenario you’d get $26.55 in merchandise, spend $5.05 out of pocket and end up with $3 in Register Rewards. So, it’s like you are paying $2.05 for everything!

The monthly Catalina deal for Degree will give you $1 RR WYB (2). So we don’t know if the Walgreens ad is simply advertising that monthly Catalina deal or if it is in addition to the monthly deal. In my scenario I am assuming that they are just advertising the monthly deal so there is only (1) Register Reward and if a second one prints than even better. Happy Shopping! ;-)

IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THESE TRANSACTIONS
-) You can’t have more MQ than items! Blue = MQ
-) You don’t have to do these in one day, just pick up where you left off.
-) I always bring some extra fillers with me to the register, in case of an emergency!
-) If you have the $.75/1 for Degree your transaction will be $1 more.
-) Transaction #4 is good Sunday ONLY so if you shop later in the week just leave it off.

just wondering where the $4.00 RR Gillette RR comes from in the last senerio? I only see the airwick and the wexford! Thanks for all you do!

On transaction #4 you have (Get Back $4 RR Gillette) – where does that $4 RR come from – AirWick isn’t Gillette and you have $3RR listed for Airwick. Thanks

I believe that is a typo. Copied from
Last weeks scenario.

Is transaction #4 only good on Sunday because of the coupon which expires 8/21 ? If so, I have (I believe from SS 8/14) a MQ “on any 1 AIR WICK Freshmatic Ultra or Freshmatic Compact Starter Kit” (expires 9/25) which can be used the whole week.

Isn’t there a coupon for dial bodywash from a last week or the week before?

Reply

Tracey August 20, 2011 at 11:05 pm

There is a coupon on dial bodywash but it is for $1/2 I think that is why it is not included.

Reply

Leslie August 20, 2011 at 11:42 pm

Jennifer – I have a $1/2 I got from one of the more recent inserts, but couldn’t tell you which one. You can always check the coupon database.

Reply

Jennifer August 21, 2011 at 12:20 am

There’s a $1/2 Dial Bodywash in the RP from 8/7 in mine…doesn’t help since the RR is 1 per transaction. You’d end up paying more OOP to use the coupon than you would if you did two separate transactions without the Q.

Is there a limit on the number of register rewards that print out? I wanted to get 4+ items that have one using all my revlon RR from last week.

I went to Wags tonite here in Boynton on Federal Hwy. tonite just to pick up my Expo markers for free and get some candy, well there was a young couple in front of me with alot of coupons and doing a few transactions so they called someone up to help with the line that was forming, well a women with a tag that said she was asst mgr.was ringing me up and the couple was at the register in front of me,the cashier ask the asst mgr about a RR that didnt print for a product and believe it or not she told the cashier well if they used a Mfg. q it will not give them a RR, well I said nope thats not right but thats all I said and I think they probably lost out on alot more due to people who are not trained properly to work at these jobs, I waited outside I really wanteed to tell them, so maybe they could go back in and do a return,, I know a store tried to pull that on me and it took 3 different calls to corp and I finally got a call to go to that store and pick up my 5 dollar gift card it was not the amount that mattered to me it was the point of,I just get so tired of people who are not trained right. Anyway the store I was at tonite does not get many couponers cause most of the time they have most everything, but I hate to shop there because they are just so clueless!!

Was told by a clerk today at our Walgreens that we could only do 2 transactions today. “New store policy” apparently. I told him that last Sunday we were told it would be 3 transactions and he demanded the manager who told us 3 transactions because “he was lying”.

I refused to say who it was and adjusted accordingly to by my Dial, Proglide Razor, and degree. Used my RR’s towards 5/$13 pepsi, and Big Roll TP. On another sour note, this cashier made me tear out each in store Q from the flyer. It would seem that they are trying to discourage people from shopping there.

halvensh August 21, 2011 at 9:31 am

Pete, yeah i have been hearing this alot. I know for a fact, my brother works for walgreens, granted for only 6 months or so, but he said they just throw the store Qs out at the end of the day. They dont keep them, so I agree it seems like they are discouraging people from coupon shopping.

Wow Pete..your post makes me so happy I have a great staff to work with at my Walgreens. One cashier proclaims to “hate Sundays” because there are mistakes with coupons..but they are always very friendly and accommodating. I need to bring them treats and let them know I appreciate them!

BTW my store ad only listed $1RR for 1 Degree…I was thrilled to get the $4 RR and I wouldn’t have known without this site…thanks Christie!

I came in contact with my first shelf clearer. I’ve heard about them but had never seen them. She took the 10 ProRelief toothpastes, atleast 5 Airwicks, and 7 Dial Body washes. There was nothing left on the shelf. I saw her at the register doing transaction after transaction. I asked her if she took all the toothpastes and she said yes. I asked if she even needed them all and what she was doing with them. She said “uhm, I’ll probably donate them.” I was so pissed, usually I’m a quiet person, usually shy. I told her I only wanted two, she just continued her transactions. The manager and assistant manager were watching and I said it wasn’t fair. They let me know she had been there an hour so far. I said they should limit it to a coupon, but the manager said they can’t limit (which they aren’t supposed to). The manager checked the back for me and brought me two, as well as an Airwick. He was soooo nice to me, I could tell he wasn’t too pleased with the shelf clearing women. He was very nice to me though. She was ridiculous! I said “That is so rude” loud enough for her to hear, and walked out.

Mary August 21, 2011 at 9:44 am

Glad you spoke up … I get quite a few coupons and make it a point to visit several stores (if necessary) to avoid clearing any shelves at any particular store. I’m betting she is lying about ‘donating them’. People like that should make special orders ahead of time with management, especially with a nice store manager like the one you spoke to. She could’ve at least let you check out in between some of her transactions.

Reply

Coupon Granny August 22, 2011 at 12:25 pm

Wish I could make a special order. I tried to SO Keri last week and my store said they can’t SO on RR. This week I tried to SO on Dawn, and was told they can’t SO on anything at all. We can do only one RR transaction per day. I really don’t mind the one RR rule, but sure do wish we could SO. That makes no sense at all to me, but she said it came from two layers up in the hierarchy – forget which is higher – regional or district. I don’t mind making repeat trips so as not to clear the shelves, but only hope that others would be equally considerate. Still the SO thing I just don’t get.

Christie August 21, 2011 at 10:00 am

There are a few not nice words I’d like to use right now. Call corporate and complain so there is a record of the complaint. The manager can absolutely limit her to (2) transactions of each RR deal for example. Then if she wants to come back Saturday to see if there are more left, fine.

Someone that rude isn’t “donating” anything. A heart is required to donate and someone who wouldn’t give you a single tube of toothpaste when she is buying 10 doesn’t have a heart! GRRRRRRR.

Reply

guest August 21, 2011 at 12:02 pm

I agree with Christie’s GRRRRRRR.

Anyways, I haven’t encountered any shelf clearers since I know there are different customers buying the same items during the week. If I can’t find an item at one store, I go to another.

The cashiers are always patient with my Q stack. One night a manager who checked me out asked if I wanted to do multiple tranactions to lower my OOP since I bought 3 items that will give RRs. I said no thanks since Walgreens has such awesome clearance items that I manage to use all the RR on one trip and start off with zero RR for a future trip.

Also whenever a cashier asks me if I would like to buy and donate gum, snacks, etc. for after school programs or $1 for some charity, I always give back to the community. Why? Because if it wasn’t for this site, I wouldn’t have gotten so many “free items (paying only taxes)” for the past few months. So the extra money that I saved by not purchasing them at Walmart or Target gets donated to good causes.

So thanks for all the hard work Christie 🙂

Melissa August 21, 2011 at 3:59 pm

I agree with both GRRRRR’s. I’m usually such a nice person but seeing her in there like that with all her bags behind the counter really hit me. I could tell she was just going to hoard them. She looked like the crazy cat lady that has no friends. She even parked in the handicap spot right up front. She even asked “Did you want one?” (not offering but asking if I was wanting to purchase them) I said “Yes, I’d like to buy two” but nothing. I just couldn’t believe it. They way she acted I knew she wouldn’t be donating them, nor did she need them. She could have bought 2 and by the next time a store was offering free TP she could have bought two more. She was allowing people to check out ahead of her while she was getting her change purse ready for the next transaction. The manager just happened to see me and brought me over. They were both staring at her. I’ve usually never complained but I’m actually going to call corporate. I just didn’t want to ruin it for people trying to do 4 transactions a day because of her 20+. I’m going to the Women’s shelter tomorrow for my REAL donation. I’m going to ask how often they get donations from couponers and see what they say.

I love this site as well as you Christie. I refresh the page constantly throughout the day, as well as wildforcvs. It has helped me alot. Thank you for everything you do for all of us. I’m only 24 but now that I’m living on my own 2,300 miles from home I have to stretch my dollars. Now I know, Walgreens….be there at 5am!

I really do hate the shelf clearers and unfortunately my closest store has what I call the Midnight Marauders. They are there at midnight and literally clear the shelves of all of the good RR items. I have complained to the managers and they acknowledge that it’s happening, but don’t do anything to stop it. I have noticed that they’ve quit stocking the RR items table until mid to late Sunday morning though which means I might get something at 9 or 10:00. Haven’t even bothered to go today though – hope the next truck has some sale items on it.

Sounds like that cashier needs a little more training in customer care and controlling the lines.
I am a Front End Supervisor at Michaels and we get a lot of customers with handfulls of competitor coupons (we can only take 1 per transaction).

If the store is empty (no line at all) we may ring as many as 5-6 separate transactions – HOWEVER – before I even start the first transaction I politely let them know that if a line forms behind them I will have to stop after 2 transactions and they’ll have to get back in line to be fair to the other customers. Most are fine with that, though sometimes you have to go further and inform them that they could be the one in line waiting behind someone else next time.

ZAIN August 21, 2011 at 1:10 pm

What I have seen in more terrible than a shelf clearer. In my walgreens, the employees are the ones “gaming” with their friends and not putting out all the RR items. you’ll see 2 or 3 on the shelves and the rest in their back rooms. I have witnessed their friends coming in and walking out with 8 or 10 of anything and everything on sale. In exchange these women give the cashiers extra coupons for holding all the stuff for them. I have complained on the 800 # a couple of times but to no avail. Even if you walk in the minute the sales started, you wont find any of the deals in the store:(

Shelf clearers are at work in my closest Walgreens. I hate to stop shopping there, as it is a new, nice store 5 minutes from my house, but today may have cured me. I went in at 10:00 am (store opens at 8) – place was not crowded but they were down to 1 Dial soap, out of the Colgate, and out of the Fusion razors already. Big hole where the product had been. I got the last Dial but missed out on the other two. Also, you really need to check your register rewards and make sure they all print. Today was the second time this week that a store shorted me on register rewards – I had to get back in line, get a manager, etc. They made it right by just giving me a refund for the amount, but if I hadn’t caught it it would have cost me $6.00. Cashiers and managers there are pretty patient, though, as long as you are nice.

I looked around but did not see the deal on Hot Pockets listed. They are 2/$3.00 in their ad couple that with the coupon in the August booklet $1.00/2 and you would pay 1.00 each for a two pack of Hot Pockets. AND you can use the MQ for $1.00/3. I bought four boxes of the two packs and used these coupons plus a $3.00RR from last week and got all four boxes for free. YAY!

You said, “My great checker ran it first to see if I’d get the $4. Super nice.” What does your nice cashier do to run it first to see if it will work? When I ask, they tell me they can’t tell until the transaction finishes and the receipt and RR print out? Therefore, that’s not a trial, but an actual transaction?

Reply

Rennelda August 23, 2011 at 11:37 am

I have had them run it as a transaction. When they actually ring it up as a sale, the RR will have to be tossed since it was not a “real” paid transaction. Then the manager has to void that run through transaction. Then you can go about your transaction.

Quick question…I have coupons for Degree Premium…I have no idea which kind that is but I’m guessing since it specifically says Premium that it is the one not included in the 2/$4 sale?

My wags didnt have that kind of deodorant, but it was the only coupon i had. So i used it this morning and it worked just fine. No beeps.

In the my paper their was the $1 off for the Degree Premium and $0.75 off for any Degree. Just because it scans and goes through doesn’t make it right or OK.

Reply

Shelby August 21, 2011 at 4:05 pm

The Degree premium is not the deoderant on sale, don’t try it. Also the Dial is for “16oz”, doesn’t work on the 18oz. My Colgate RR did roll thankfully but the dial does not. If you still have the $1.00 of 2 keebler cookies, you can use two of them and buy 4 for $10, get $5 back – like paying $3 for four cookies!

Christie could you or anyone from the discussion board please tell me which upcs worked for you? Would like to try the deal again at another store using the correct product.

Thank you for all you do!

I LOVE walgreens! I am reminded everytime I look at the “advertised” prices at other stores and I am so grateful for the $ we all get to save!I would like to make one request though. Please everyone don’t clear shelves or even take five toothpastes or whatever just to “donate”, there are PLENTY of us out there that would like to get the deal ourselves. Someone taking 10 toothpastes just made it difficult for 9 other people to get the deal. I’m all for donating, however I’m sure the food bank (and the people using it) would much rather have food over sensitive toothpaste. Just saying…

Reply

margaret August 21, 2011 at 4:41 pm

actually, if the ppl using the food bank cannot afford food (which is why they are there) do you think they can afford toiletries? No they cant. My food bank LOVES every single toiletry I give them and have now started requesting stuff from me, like giving me a list of what they need.

I am not a shelf clearer, however I do get excess to donate ALL the time. I have tons of walgreens by me so I just go to them. So do not assume that donating non food things to a food bank is not wanted or needed. I have had people cry because I walked in with a box of deodorant to donate as they were there picking up food and they really really needed some.

I am going to assume that you have never needed the services of a food bank or been so poor you dont know how it is to not be able to afford soap or anything else let alone food. Until you have walked in those peoples shoes, dont assume they would not be happy to get some sensitive toothpaste

Reply

Shelby August 21, 2011 at 5:09 pm

I’m not trying to be presumptuous at all. I thankfully have not had to go to the food bank. I could go on the defensive and talk about all the stuff I donate, but this isn’t about who is better because of how much I can stuff in my basket to donate. I do unfortunately know a little bit about budgeting family finances after a job loss. I also know that I’m not the only family that has to budget for food and “squeeze” in enough for non-food items. The excess items you are referring to are actually not excess to the next person that wanted to get the deal.

My wife and I have been on both sides of this debate. We have bought extra stuff when it was cheap or free and donated and have been a few minutes late to our WAGS to see empty shelves and people buying stuff to donte. After lots of thought about this topic and reading boths sides. We have decided that the best way to buy stuff to donate is to go on Saturday night and get the remaining stuff that is still cheap or free for donations. That way the families that need the stuff and are doing the work to find the good deals have more than ample chance to get their take.

We have judged and been judged ourselves in our couponing endeveavors and have decided that we need to do what we feel is right and ethical on this journey. We feel great with our choices.

Seeing the look in someones face when you tell them about a great deal and write down this website for them to check out is almost as good as free toothpaste!!

Most of the time, there is more to the story than what we see looking in from the outside. Good as well as bad. We are having fun on our treasure hunt to find deals and know that if we missed this weeks deal there will be another one coming up with the next batch of ads.

Thanks Christie for this great site and for being part of our journey.

That is a GREAT suggestion! I often buy to donate too, but have done a lot less of that since the “extreme coupon” craze. I used to be able to buy higher quantities and they’d always be plenty left on Saturdays. Before “extreme couponing” I even had one manager who would often call me on a Saturday begging me to come buy what was left so the store wouldn’t be stuck with it. Those days are gone. 🙁

But like many of you, I do like to give back and I think making a special Saturday evening donation trip is a great idea! Thanks for the suggestion. 🙂

Thank you so much for your comment and thank you Christine for this website! I’ve referred so many people to it. It IS such an interesting debate. I’m glad we can all chat about this and see both sides. There actually is a middle ground. As I’ve been doing this for awhile I’ve noticed deodorant, soap, toothpaste etc. seems to CONSTANTLY be on sale at wags. Yes, some sales are better than others but even buying a couple packages of toothpaste/deodorant, etc each sale can leave you with ample leftovers to donate. You don’t really even have to buy more than one item per RR scenario to be able to donate and you can do it without clearing the shelves. Plus, by the comments other people have made, maybe if you do want to buy a lot to donate, maybe those people should contact their store managers for such a shipment? OK, off my soap box now 🙂 Did I mention I love this site?

I have a problem with people buying just to donate. The manufacturers put out coupons to introduce people to their products who will purchase them in the future. If we only purchase to donate, then the manufacture is out a lot of money and will not put out such great deals in the future. I am seeing this already, as I have been couponing for over 40 years.

One thing you may want to try this week….Energizer batteries were on sale (Lithium for $5.99 4-pack, usually $8.99). I didn’t have a coupon, but I needed them so I picked up a pack. Noticed that the packaging had a “Get a $10 Gas Reward Card” for buying two packs that didn’t expire until 1/13/12. Better yet, you entered the codes on Facebook, so nothing to mail in. Bought the second pack, did the redeem (easy) when I got home and now I’ll get a $10 Discover gift card in the mail…almost made the batteries FREE! Look around and see if you can find some with the yellow peelie on front! (one per household)

Stock-piling, stocking-up, hoarding, holding, shelf clearing and just catching good deals. We have a family of 7, how many hot pockets is too many? At .67 a box that is a cheap and quick meal that the kids think is a special treat. And works great around trips to soccer and dance and friends houses for homework sessions.
