Ideas for Cheap Fillers

by Christie Bisbee on April 26, 2010

I’m often getting e-mails about what can be used as an inexpensive filler for your transactions.  So I wanted to give you some ideas and profile some different items that have worked well for me.

First off you can only imagine my reaction when I was searching the store yesterday for filler items and I found this! 🙂

I always list some inexpensive fillers from the ad in the match ups, so you can always look there to get ideas. Here are some additional items that I use frequently…

– Knee Highs on sale or on clearance $.13 – $.33
– Holiday Pencils (if available) $.12 – $.25
– Holiday Cups (if available) $.12 – $33
– Holiday Bags (if available) $.12 – $.33
– Holiday Candy Clearance (if available) $.20 – $.50
– Clearance Toys, Balloons, Coloring Books $.25 – $.75
– Clearance Office Items $.25 – $.69
– Individual Popcorn Bags $.31 – $.50
– Wags Baking Soda if on sale $.33 – $.50
– Candy Bars $.39 – $.69
– W Hydrogen Peroxide on sale $.33 – $.75
– W Pantiliners on sale $.50
– W Soda 20oz on sale $.39 – $.59
– Wags Gloves if on sale $.50
– Canned Food if on sale $.50 – $.79

What are some of your favorite fillers?

Thanks for all your investigation! Makes my Wags trip less confusion. I am very new to this and can’t believe all the deals I’ve passed up by not even considering shopping at Walgreens! Your site and hard work make it all easy for me. 🙂

*edit for poor spelling: confusing not confusion…still sleepy this morning*

Thanks for this list. This is something I struggle to find. I’ve sometimes used cowtails by the register or clearance holiday candy.

The cashiers keep telling me that they MUST scan the WAGS coupon first, and then MFG coupons. I shop at two different Walgreen’s in my area. One store said that they have had cashiers get fired over the order they are scanning in coupons. Anyone else have this happen?

I will often use votive candles for fillers. They are $.50 each or 5/$2.

When I hand over my stack of coupons I always put the walgreens coupons on the bottom and they always fish through them and ring them first. Lately I have been just handing over a few manufacturer coupons, then a few more then the walgreens coupons.

For this week, I’m planning to use the Walgreen’s Aluminum Foil as fillers. Just right coz I’m running out of foil. 🙂

I always go for the caramels near the register. They’re conviently placed in case I forget to grab a few. 🙂

Teri,

I also have cashiers tell me they MUST scan Wags coupons before MFQ’s too. It happens at all three WAGS in the area. They all also limit transactions to 3 per day.

I just noticed individual bags of “Uncle Rays” chips by the register today. They’re 3 for $1.00 so I grabbed some of those for my fillers today instead of the caramels (which I think taste gross). The cashier commented on my chips and said they’re really good. So I got home and tried them and the Bar-B-q and Sour Cream & Onion are fabulous…taste just like Lay’s.

I got some “Uncle Ray’s” for $0.25 this weekend. I got the “HOT” flavor, and they were REALLY HOT but yummy!

Hi there. Just heard about your site on another coupon blog. Thanks for all the great info!

I have been on the hunt for fillers too and recently I have been adding veggie seeds for 33c because we do not need any more caramels 🙂 But now I know that I can go grab some Hydrogen peroxide or 25c clearance items as well. If you have time and patience you can print out a picture for 26c for a filler too.

Hello i am new to your site and addicted!! Thanks for all your great work!! I wanted to add that the walgreens instant pudding at my store is usually 3/$1 so that makes a great filler as well 🙂

I was told by more than 1 cashier at more than one wags that they were strickly told that they HAVE to scan wag Qs, then RR, then Man Q. Craziness, I know because it pretty much insures a beep!!!

Yep, that’s right. Beeps galore even if the wags q has nothing to do with the mq you are using. So you aren’t even stacking coupons and the register is beeping. So silly!

On Sunday I use the newspaper as a filler item. The hubbie hates to go on a coupon run with me, but if he is with me I run him through the line behind me and he has a news paper too. (although the grumbling sometimes is not worth the effort) I like using the paper as a filler since it is something I would buy anyway. If not then I use a 20oz drink or ramen noodles, both of which you can never have too many of LOL!

What I always do is go to the first page in the ad. Then I look for cheap food. I know that I am going to have to buy the food anyway for FULL price, so I might as well use it as a filler item! An example is boxes of mac were on sale two weeks ago for $0.69 and that was a great filler (got like 11). Last week they had the mandrin oranges on sale for $0.50. Both I was going to pay full price at my store, so I figure might as well pay an extra $0.20 on a filler and get something that I NEED. This week I will probably use tuna or soup as a filler.

For a filler, I also use the caramels by the register for $.33 each.

It seems as if 1/3 of the time a dozen eggs at Wags are $1.29 or less. Since this is cheaper than my grocery, I often grab those as a filler since I’d be buying them anyways each week.

I have done four transactions since Sunday and since Christie says to give them the MQ’s first, I handed those over first. After they finished keying those in, I handed them the rest. No one said anything about it and I was at three different registers. You’re right, if you hand them over all at once, they fish through them. Does it just mean that they will have to price adjust (if you have overage) the man q if they make you give the WAG q first?

Christie April 27, 2010 at 10:34 am

Most cashiers won’t price adjust, so usually it means they won’t let you use the MQ. I also find that even non stacked coupons will beep after they scan the Wags Qs. This happened to me with Stayfree in one transaction and Plackers in another. I had given my cashier all my q’s, then she scanned the Wags Qs and then she (my cashier, bless her heart!) realized I had forgotten the stayfree, sure enough beep, beep, beep. There isn’t even a Wags Q for stayfree so it’s bizarre that it would beep, but it did. Same thing in another transaction with Plackers. I try to aim for the beep-free experience. 🙂
