I just purchased this deal for the first time. 80% off? Who wouldn’t want that? But I’m wondering if anyone could explain how tipping works? For my deal, I see that it says “18% gratuity added prior to discount” but on the side bar it says, “Please remember to tip your server on the full value of the guest check.” So what does this mean, I just pay the remainder of the bill after my $25 is deducted, or do I still need to leave extra besides the bottom line of the check?

As someone who waited tables in college… Yes, you want to leave the tip based on the amount before the discount, since the amount of work the server did was based on the amount you ordered. Think of it kind of like a gift certificate. You’d leave the tip based on the amount of the check before the gift certificate. That way when you come back next month with another Restaurants.com gift certificate your waiter will be extra nice!

If they automatically add on the 18% then they should do it on the pre-discount amount. If they don’t and they calculate it based on the after discount amount, I would leave some extra to make up the difference. 🙂

i’m wondering the same thing, like u stated Carrie, it says “18% gratuity added prior to discount” so why does it even mention tipping the server on the full value. Wouldn’t the 18% gratuity be the tip? Unless maybe that is standard on all the certificates and maybe some do not require an 18% gratuity?

Christie, i’m not sure u really understood what was asked. Anyone know?

I think it’s just standard stuff. Some restaurants will include the gratuity and some won’t. So I think it’s just on all of them.

Just figure one way or the other you’ll pay 18% on the full price. Just look at your bill and if it’s on there you are done and if it’s not – leave it in the tip.
