Walgreens: Updates From the Field 2/12

by Christie Bisbee on February 12, 2012

Here are some updates from my trip today to help your trip go a little smoother!

New On-Line Ad: Not a single item that was from the “viewable on-line only ad” had a sign in any of the stores I stopped in, not one. They all rang up the right price, but not a sign to be spotted. Hmmm, maybe the new marketing strategy is for sales to be a secret. 😉

LypSyl: I picked this up at a store with the new registers and it prompted the cashier for a price, but it did print my Register Reward. I found it with the lip balms. Make sure you get the cold sore relief, there is another type priced at $2.99 that looks similar but no Register Reward.

got2be: I had the got2be coupon in one insert and not another. So looks like this one was very regional. My guess is these coupons are probably available on eBay. Manufacturer’s coupons do not give overage at Walgreens. The official Walgreens coupon policy is to adjust the coupon down by a 1¢.

If you have a problem, show the coupon policy to the manager. If that doesn’t work, I personally would call corporate. What is the point of having a policy if no one honors it?! How would people react if one day they walked into their local Walgreens and were told that they no longer could return items because the manager decided to create his or her own return policy? Probably wouldn’t go over well!

Huggies Slip-Ons: These are included in the $8.99 price (the $6.99 price they have pictured is after the $2/1 Walgreens coupon) and both Walgreens coupons work on this. However, the $2/2 in the new Infant Care book is only taking of $1/2 or .50 on one. So depending on what coupons you have you can get it for as low as $3.49 each.

Huggies Jumbo Pk Slip-On Diapers $8.99
-$3/1 Huggies Slip-On printable (no longer available check your binder!)
-$1.50/1 Huggies Diapers, exp. 03/10/12 (SS 02/12/12)
-$2/1 Huggies Little Movers, Little Snugglers or Overnite Diapers, exp. 03/10/12 (SS 02/12/12)
-$2/1 Huggies Little Movers Slip-On Diapers (Walgreens, Feb)
-$2/2 packages of Huggies Diapers, exp. 02/28/12 (Walgreens Infant Care 5969)
= AS LOW AS $3.49 WHEN YOU STACK COUPONS!

Ricola: Although the size for the Dual Action is a match, only the regular Ricola are ringing up $1.29. You can use the -$1/2 Ricola Bags (SS 01/01/12) to make them .79 each.

Bayer Aspirin: The Bayer chewables that are priced at $1.99 this month are ringing up B1G1 so you can grab those for just .49 each.

Buy (2) Bayer Aspirin B1G1 50% OFF (Low Dose Chewable Aspirin $1.99)
(2) -$1/1 Bayer Aspirin Product 20 ct+, exp. 4/30/12 (SS 01/29/12)
= 49¢ EACH!

So how did your shop go? Find any other great deals? Let us know!

I had received the $3 off got2b coupons in FL. However, the items were priced $5.99 ea, @ B1G1 Free. They would not allow me to use (2) coupons on the 2 items.

Same thing for me yesterday.

I am in FL as well and got the coupons. I had no problem at my store using both. The cashier adjusted the second down to $2.99.

The reason for no sale tag on FREE product is because those tags cannot go up till Sunday. The register rewards items will not print on Saturday nite.

Reply

Lisa February 12, 2012 at 7:01 pm

Suzan, I think what she is saying is that there were no signs up today.

Her updates from the field posts are always on Sunday from her Sunday shop, not from Saturday.

Christie February 12, 2012 at 7:08 pm

I was shopping today – Sunday, not yesterday. They had signs up for the other sale deals but not for the ones you can only see on-line.

Christie, I agree–what an odd marketing strategy!

There ARE signs for the online only ads. Some stores are just used to printing regular ones (Stores got NO notifications of ads being online now, seriously.) They are in a different batch of ad tags to print called BONUSBUYS or something like that 😛

At my Walgreens, the cold sore treatment rang up at $8.99, but produced the $5 register reward. I caught it after I already paid, so they sent me over to the beauty counter and gave me a $3.99 refund. Even the manager thought it was strange, because if there is a price mistake, usually the RR doesn’t print!

Also, the cashier wouldn’t let me use 2 coupons on the Got2B, because one of them rang up at $0, and “you can’t use a coupon on a free item.” I didn’t have the coupon policy with me, and I didn’t feel like arguing, so I just asked her to take it off my bill and left without it.

And I’m sure most people know by now, but the Cottonelle TP doesn’t produce the RR. Oh well, it was worth a shot! It’s still not a horrible price at $.25 a roll.

I went to a store north of me instead of my normal store hoping that they had the St. Joseph’s in….which they didn’t and I ended up arguing with the store manager over it when the cashier called her over. She said yes, you can use 2 coupons on a B1G1Free deal and it usually works when you use 2 coupons with it (like 2 .75 off coupons) but this just doesn’t seem right. I told her she had to adjust it down. The only difference is the amount of the coupon. She kept telling me that she could lose her job over it. I told her to take her time trying to wrap her head around it because I was right. She ended up adjusting the price down and giving me all 4 items free with the $3 off coupons. It is CRAZY that even store managers are saying the same thing I am but arguing that it just doesn’t seem right.

I went this morning to get the got 2 be deal. I had enough coupons to get 16 bottles the cashier was real nice she tried everything she could to get it to scan the second coupon but it wouldn’t work. So she called over the manager, she would not let me use them I even told her to mark the one coupon down a penny and I asked to speak to the store manager who wont be there till monday but she did call and the SM told her to show me the policy but when she did she only read me one line of it and told me to come back tomorrow if I needed to talk to the SM!! I can not believe they are doing this over a PENNY!!!! I even told her I would give her a peeny for each one and she just looked at me!! I am not the one who marked bogo free they did and they need to read there policy a little better!! I will be calling corporate tomorrow!!

Lisa February 12, 2012 at 7:50 pm

Normally they should adjust the coupon down or the price up by a penny. However, this particular coupon says “Coupon may not exceed the value of the item purchased.” Since one of the two products is free, they can’t apply the second coupon to it. Also, the coupon is limited to 4 per shopping trip, so I’m not sure how you could buy more than 4.

Reply

samantha February 14, 2012 at 6:10 am

The coupon says it may not exceed the VALUE of the item, not the PRICE of the item. These coupons are written by lawyers and, legally, there is a difference between VALUE and PRICE.

I did the Got 2 be deal and i got 4 for free, it seemed that the cashier had a bit of a problem, I’m not sure what he did but he got everything to work!! awesome, can’t wait to try it!

Kristen February 13, 2012 at 3:32 pm

16 bottles?!? Is that really necessary? Walgreens tends to not carry that much product. Shelf clearing really bothers me and I think you could have survived on 4-6 bottles at the most and left the rest for others to take advantage of the awesome sale.

Reply

Debbie P. February 14, 2012 at 8:13 am

I agree with you whole-heartedly Kristen. “Everyone” likes to get a good deal. Everyone should be able too. The greed factor is selfish and wrong. Do you really need to wipe out the shelve’s supply just because you can?

If you have the Feb. book – should be available in your store – it’s page 23. 🙂

Will Walgreens just give you a copy of the Infant Care Book, or do you have to “buy” one off of Ebay?

Thanks!

Reply

They aren’t available in store like last year. They were sent to certain individuals. The stores cannot order them either.

Reply

I got mine at the store, at the cosmetic counter last year!

Reply

jess February 12, 2012 at 9:45 pm

i believe they only got them in southern california, though *some wags will let you use the code without seeing the coupon 🙂

Reply

FrugalBehind February 12, 2012 at 10:36 pm

Stores don’t have one to give you. Corporate doesn’t have any to give you. It’s “whatever we sent out, we sent out”.

However, coupon-friendly stores/cashiers will be more than happy to enter the code (5969) for you. If you don’t know your store/cashiers that well, just ask before they ring up your item. I’ve done that bunches of times… as simple as “Hey, will you enter a coupon code for me if I give it to you?” before I even go get my items.

Reply

Angel B February 12, 2012 at 11:07 pm

That is what I do…Just ask…because if it isn’t a “real” code, it will kick it back. The only thing my cashier asked today was “is that from last year’s infant book” I said no…it is this years. No problem 🙂

ORdered my Got2B coupons off Ebay…can’t wait to try them. Already talked to the cashier about it. Offered to give her a couple…she is THRILLED! M

Can’t stress enough…MAKE friends w/ your beauty cashier!!! She knows of great deals and awesome coupons and MORE willing to help you figure out weird stuff!

My trip went well. Had a $10 RR to use. Bought Lypsyl ($5), St Joseph Aspirin ($2), 2 boxes Hefty Freezer Bags (bogo $3.29)and 2 bottles of Vit D3 (bogo $4). Used a $3/2 Nature’s Bounty q, $1/2 Hefty q and $10 RR. Total was .29 and got back $5 RR, $2RR and doing the $4 rebate on the vitamins. A good day overall.

I was really excited to get the got2be coupon. I live in Idaho and we don’t usually get the good coupons. I went to two different walgreens. If you buy six you can use five coupons no problem but the machine beeps when you try to use all six coupons. I’m not sure why but I figured $2.99 for six bottles was a good price for me (I have three teenagers).

Reply

Babrara February 14, 2012 at 1:11 pm

because your total was 17.94 – your last coupon woulda had to be priced down to 2.94

I had a similar trip this morning. Got my 4 packs of huggies and asked them why it was coming up $1/2 not the $2/2. She said they didn’t have the infant book so couldn’t look it up. Still a great deal. I got 4 got2be products in one transaction. It rang up 3 of my coupons just perfect but beeped on the 4th one. I asked for the store manager. She came up and said she can’t adjust the coupon at all, only the walgreens coupons. I argued with her a minute and she ended up pushing it through as a regular coupon, so I made 2 cents on that transaction. Overall, spent $15 and saved a ton!

I do not get the infant care book in Albuquerque. My Walgreens is very coupon friendly. The cashier likes for me to give her the four digit code on the Walgreens coupons. Thank you for posting the code for the Huggies from that infant book.

For those having trouble with the Got2B BOGO, explain to them that when something is BOGO it basically means that each item is half price. When my Wags only has one item left of a BOGO item, then just discount it by 50% and still let me use my coupon. Of course, I have had to argue about adjusting down a coupon before and lost that battle with a crabby cashier and told her just to take the item back. They’re not very good about adjusting coupons. 🙁

Reply

Andrew February 12, 2012 at 10:23 pm

For starters, I am in Southern California, Los Angeles. I got the Got2b in my inserts.

Here’s what my receipt looks like for the transaction:
“Got2B Item 5.99 SALE
Got2B Item 0.00 SALE
1 @ 1/5.99 – 2/5.99
MFG COUPON 3.00- MFGC
MF COUPON -2.99 MFGC
==========================
Total w/ Tax: $0.52

Thanks to my “pro” cashier, she adjusted the coupon down without problems. She said she checked with her manager, and the district manager, and she “won’t get in trouble” doing this (referring to someone who commented above about the manager trying to save her own booty).

About my WG store:
$2.39 YESTOCARROTS Shampoo Clearance! I was in heaven.
$3.29 Gold Bond Body wash clearance! Used $2/1 MQ, and got them for $1.39 each! 😀
Lots of hair ties on clearance, and WG brand lotions on clearance.

the following is the coupon policy from walgreens.com

“Buy One, Get One Free Coupons
When items are featured in a Buy One, Get One Free promotion, up to two coupons can be used against the items being purchased, as long as the net price does not go below zero for the items being purchased.
Sales tax must be paid for any Buy One, Get One Free coupon offers, if required by applicable state laws.”

no where does it state to markdown coupons, haven’t gone in to my local Walgreen’s yet though.

Reply

Christie February 12, 2012 at 10:37 pm

If you read the policy in it’s entirety you’ll also see this…

“In the event that any item’s selling price is less than the value of the coupon, Walgreens will only accept the coupon in exchange for the selling price of the item.”

Reply

FrugalBehind February 12, 2012 at 10:47 pm

It actually addresses it twice. I specifically inquired about this combination (BOGO + coupon adjustment) with customer service and they assured me that yes, that *is* how it’s supposed to be handled – you get to use 2 coupons on a BOGO and if they go over they should be adjusted.

Reply

VB February 12, 2012 at 10:48 pm

I think their policy is confusing to their employees especially with the way the registers ring up the bogo. Above that explanation of the bogo policy they talk about cpns on items and that the price of an item cannot be below zero. So since the second item in a bogo is free than cashiers feel that is the reason the cpn beeps. I wish the registers just rang up an item at 1/2 off on bogo deal! Lol.

Mary February 13, 2012 at 5:15 pm

My local Walgreen’s refused to price down the $3 coupon. However, I still was able to purchase 2 for free. I had 4 coupons, but last q was not accepted, so she voided last two got2bs … But, even after she voided off the last two, the register still prompted for her to owe me $.03 !!! I shouldn’t need a filler. So what did I do wrong?

These were my items:
2 Got2be ($5.99 for both)
1 Lysol Cold Sore Cream ($5)
2 Cheez-It 4oz ($.99 each)
1 Folger’s Coffee ($3.49)
SUBTOTAL: $16.46
I used these qs:
2 $3 Got2b (-$6)
$10 RR
… after she voided last two Got2b items my total was -$.03, which is not ok.

I live in Texas so I never calculate tax when I use coupons, but I never noticed coupons take off tax regardless if items being purchased are taxable or not. After adding a can of Campbell’s Soup ($.69 w/in-ad q), my total came out to $.66 … as if calculating RR and fillers wasn’t confusing enough!!! I’m not complaining, but if anyone coupons ‘down to the penny’, it will make a difference. My receipt indicates sales tax (8.25%) -$.49

Reply

Christie February 13, 2012 at 6:09 pm

It’s because she voided the last two after you had given her the coupons. That’s actually what made it go thru.

Several months ago I had a problem with the manager at Walgreens about stacking Walgreens coupons and MQs, she told me I could not use both and she was rude about it too. I left lie store came home and read their coupon policy, I sent them an email complaining about my experience, the very next day I got a phone call from the general manager and he apologized and told me he would fix that with employees and that manager.
Last week I was at another Walgreens doing the star wars BOGO deal with BOGO MQ and cashier told me I could not use that coupon because I was already getting one free item, I told her to call her manager and he told me the same thing, I was so mad that even the manager does not know the store coupon policy, I told him I was going to my car to see if I had my coupon policy to show him and maybe even call the corporate office, his response was ” well if you are going to make a big deal about this coupon I will take it this time.” I finished my transaction went to my car to look for the coupon policy brought it inside, showed it to the cashier.

I did the Got2Be deal today with no problem. I bought (4) items and they rang up 1 at $5.99 and the 2nd at $0.00. All 4 of my $3 coupons came off in full. I live in Los Angeles area and I guess I just got lucky!

Walgreens refused to push the second Got2b Q, b/c of the overage issue, but then i found out that CVS has Got2b for $3.99. Walgreens would be a better deal if you are planning to buy a lot of bottles, b/c even if they refuse to adjust the last Q you still get all the other bottles for free and the last one for $2.99 plus tax on the whole thing. CVS would be better if you only have one of two coupons.

I had issues with the Got2B as the cashier was instructed by Mgr. not to adjust the coupon. So I just used the one coupon and paid $2.99 for two products.

I did see the RR posted for the Online RR deals for the 3pk Fixodent. I didn’t buy but I noticed it when I was in the aisle looking for the Efferdent deal. I have noticed that I see the associates are still postig the sale sign for items through out the day on Sundays when I am shopping. Maybe they just hadn’t posted the online yet in your store, Christie.??

I tried to but the Chapstick for sale at $0.99 and use the $1 off in the Feb. Walgreens Coupon book but it kept beeping for the cashier and she had already called the manager two times for the Got2B and I said forgret it.

Reply

Shannon February 13, 2012 at 7:13 am

So, I read this on blog and you can try it if you want or don’t if you don’t think it’s right, but it will get your Got2B coupons to go through with no problems. If you have two coupons have the cashier ring up three products. After they scan your coupons, play dumb and say “Oh, I only have two coupons, can you void one of those off?” On a side note, I think I have heard that the new registers are picky with voiding stuff off. But anyways, just thought I would pass on what I read somewhere else a while back.

I finally got this deal to work after going to two different walgreens. The first place refused to do it and I was smart and went to the cosmetics counter at the second. She had to csll her manager twice but I finally got her to take it. I kept saying just adjust the last coupon down buy 4 cents because I was buying four. Eventually her manager told her via phone to hit a button and the entire thing went through so I actually made 4 cents.

steve February 13, 2012 at 1:10 pm

i just had a lengthy phone call with corporate vover this and i was told a change had been made and that they will no longer reduce a manufacturer coupon but will gladly reduce a walgreens coupon anytime.

Reply

Christie February 13, 2012 at 2:43 pm

Hi Steve – Hmmm, nothing in their written policy has changed… I just copied and pasted this from their website.
“The coupon amount must be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied. (For example, a $5.00 coupon for a $4.99 item will result in a $4.99 coupon value).”

I don’t believe anything until I see it in writing. That would be like you go to the store to buy something on sale advertised for $1.99 and they tell you it’s $5.99 because they just made a change. But they’d be happy to sell you something else for the price in the ad. 😛

Reply

Dina February 13, 2012 at 3:08 pm

I agree Christie, but I had the same experience with the cashier telling me he can’t adjust the coupon. He ended up making the coupons go through and letting me have the overage, so I didn’t need to mention it is in their coupon policy. It will be interesting to see if they change it in writing now.

Reply

steve February 13, 2012 at 3:24 pm

hi christie i think thats what she meant about walgreens coupon being able too be reduced because now correct me if im wrong,if a man q is 3.00 and they reduce it too 2.99 is that not altering said q??? which means that it would not be paid for by the company? i mean ihave followed your blog for 2 years now and was stumped by 3 cashiers and 2 managers telling me different about coupons which is why i called corporate at 1800-925-4733 and was told they no longer reduce any man q

Reply

Christie February 13, 2012 at 5:08 pm

Both Walgreens and CVS have a coupon policy that they reduce the coupon to what the actual price of the item is. Actually when they reduce the value of the coupon you get a value of $2.99 but they’ll get reimbursed $3. They won’t loose out, they’ll get reimbursed and actually make a penny more.

In spite of these amazing technological times we live in, coupon redemption isn’t all that sophisticated (although it’s a long process a coupon goes to from start to finish). All those coupons they collect get sent off to the clearing house. They’ll take all the coupons from got2be for example and get reimbursed for all of them, as long as they aren’t submitting more got2be coupons than they actually sold.

In other words, there’s no way for them to match up a coupon with a specific transaction. No one is saying – “wait a minute this coupon is $3 but Walgreens only gave Christie $2.99 so we are paying them $2.99”. They aren’t matching transactions to coupons. So if you your store sold 300 got2be products this month and submits 200 coupons, they’ll get reimbursed for all 200 – all at $3. Regardless of what they credited you.

That’s why some stores give overage – instead of keeping the penny for themselves they pass it on to the consumer, which is what the coupon was intended for anyway. So, when they adjust that coupon down for you, they really aren’t doing you any favors. In fact, they are coming out ahead. I hope that helps! 🙂

Reply

grace February 13, 2012 at 10:31 pm

Target’s also reduces automatically when your coupon is higher than the item, I do not think it is wrong

Reply

Mary February 13, 2012 at 4:21 pm

I can understand that one would think they should just be able to adjust a coupon down, but you also quote the policy in an earlier post…

“In the event that any item’s selling price is less than the value of the coupon, Walgreens will only accept the coupon in exchange for the selling price of the item.”

To me, I interpret this as you can’t use a $3 coupon on an item that is $0. The selling price is $0 so why would they accept a $3 coupon?
I would love it if they would take a coupon for each, and as many have stated it is possible for them to do it, but doing so, in my opinion, violates their policy.

Reply

grace February 13, 2012 at 10:33 pm

that situation would never arise, why would you want to use a coupon on something that was already free? You would not be buying it, they would be giving it to you free so you would not need to use a coupon

Reply

Mary February 14, 2012 at 11:14 am

Grace, that is the entire situation with the Got2B that everyone is talking about. They are B1G1. They ring up %5.99 and $0 and people are having trouble using 2 $3 coupons. Christie is saying their policy is to devalue the coupon the 1 cent so the coupon total is $5.99. I understand where she and others are coming from on this, but i stated above how I interpret the policy in the situation that has arisen!!

Reply

FrugalBehind February 14, 2012 at 9:48 pm

Mary, the coupon policy also specifically states that you *can* use 2 coupons on a B1G1 sale. When the 2 coupons total to more than the price of the product, you refer back to the section that addresses the adjusting of coupons.

This is how Walgreens Customer Service Dept explained it to me.
