Secret Deodorant – Now Contraband???

by Christie Bisbee on August 12, 2010

The Secret Deodorant I posted about HERE is reportedly not working for many of you today. I have received various e-mails about RR not printing, signs being pulled down and stock being removed.

Reader Angela, even had the cashier take the Secret deodorant right out of her hands and tell her Walgreens corporate sent a memo that these were not to be sold! I’m so sorry Angela.

Apparently Walgreens has decided to change it’s mind about offering it’s customers this fabulous deal on Secret. Let us know what you find if you are out shopping today!

Hey Christie,
I was wonderfing how long our good fortune would last. I can’t believe that a sales associate would take it out of a customer’s hands. Well, I told a number of friends and family about the deal, so we are stocked for a while, and we’ll have enough to donate to a sheler this month.

Angela,

If I were in your shoes, I’d call corporate. That is so rude and cashiers should never treat people that way.

I’m headed out to Walgreens right now. I’ll see if the signs are still up (my store is out).

The RR didn’t work on the clearance ones in Winona MN. 🙁

Wow! I was able to grab 4 yesterday. One store I went to had it marked down, but didn’t have a RR sign by it and the other store didn’t have it marked down or a RR sign by it, but it rang up at $2.29 and gave me a RR. I was really hoping to go back later this week and get more as one of the Walgreens had at least 7 left that I counted! Wish I would have done more transactions yesterday, but I always feel bad doing multiple transactions- I did 3 at 1 store with a deodorant included in each transaction and only 1 at the other store. I also had all 4 of my kids with me ages- 4,3,2, and 1 week- that was quite the experience! Good thing they had all fallen asleep in the car & I woke them up to go into the store and they were still sleepy and not quite awake yet!

I guess I was one of the lucky ones. My Wags didn’t have a clearance or R&R sign posted but the product rang up at $2.29 and printed the RR. My store had tons left. I was planning on stopping back in later this week to get some more. Bummer.

I’m so bummed that this isn’t working anymore! I was able to get 25 of these at 6 different stores since Sunday. My cashiers were very accommodating. Two even told me to feel free to grab as many as I wanted since they had plenty of stock.

My store got more in, but the RR and clearance signs were missing. Didn’t do a price check.

This post made me laugh, thanks a much needed one on a really bad day.
Now, I am afraid someone is going to come to my door and ask for the deodorant and the $3.00 RR I have in my purse from the last transaction, yikes!!! Walgreens what are you thinking ! Let it go after all the business that is being generated out there. BAD Customer Service/relations costs way more than the deal! Other retails have found that out. I definitely would contact corporate if I was treated like that by an employee. Honor it and move on to keep your clients happy in this economy.

My reward did not print two days ago when I bought some and I thought something was fishy. The nice manager at my store just looked perplexed and gave me a gift card in lieu of the rr.

LOL! This deal was indeed too good to be true. I had a cashier ask me how much was the RR and when I said $3, she was shocked and gleefully said that she had better go get one herself. Was thinking of getting some later, but I’m glad I caught this post. Thanks for being so prompt!

I was able to pick up 2 yesterday (with the RR from the first one rolling to the second one, yea). But I went back to my store in Rochelle, IL today and it did not print out. Darn, should have known it was too good to be true, for long. In fact, I was surprised to even get the deal at all. When I went in yesterday not only was there no tag on the shelf showing a RR and discounted price, but there was no original price on the shelf either. Thank you for posting this deal, otherwise, I would never have know the possibilty.

There were like 10 left at one of my stores and I meant to buy a couple more too but it didn’t happen. Oh well! I’m happy with my money making deodorant. I mean a deodorant that normally costs $8.99 – wow, that’s some deodorant!

If anyone has success let us know. Again, I don’t know if each store had to reset their machines or if the are not printing anywhere.

I won’t answer the door today in case it’s the deodorant repo man! LOL.

Hunh! Sorry to hear that the deal went south. :/ I guess I will just be glad that I went early in the week and things worked out well.

I had purchased 1 on Monday to test the price and to see if the Register Reward was printing. I went back on Tuesday evening and lucked out with lots of stock, a slow store, and a great cashier. I bought 11 more and the cashier was kind enough to ring 11 separate transactions. I didn’t bother trying to roll the Register Rewards so I have a bunch of them to use for the next two weeks. Not a problem. I needed to buy 12 to qualify for the $30 mail in rebate and will probably donate at least half of them.

I just went today to grab one. No signs and not RR for me. 🙁

I bought some yesterday and got the RR, no problem. Went back at lunch today and NOPE, no RR. I just returned it.

This is terrible, they clearly posted a sign in my store letting me know about the clearance price and the register reward. Corporate or whoever acts like we are stealling their products, we are just purchasing them like they want us to! Why have the ads and the signage if they are going to change their mind! Getting more and more disappointed, we are not thieves just trying to get a good deal.

I went yesterday and went to 4 stores before I found it. When I did find it, it didn’t work. So I returned it. I was told by the manager that at 1:30 CST they got an e-mail and were told to pull the RR sign. I got to the 4th store around 2. I was pretty upset!
I did e-mail complaint about that and a few other issues I had yesterday and I got a call beack today. The manager I spoke to was very nice and helpful with my issues! So I feel much better now! He did say that the RR was supposed to be on the sale price of $8.99 or what ever it was, but not on the sale price. I was very please with the call I got!

I wish I had the confidence to ask for multiple transactions. My social anxiety already screams at me for using coupons so I make it as painless as possible for the cashiers and customers around me. I usually skip deals like this due to knowing they either won’t have the stock or it will somehow not work in my area. I’ve only had one bad moment with couponing and it was at a store I never shop in anyway so it was no biggie. I already had 4-5 deodorants so I’m happy with my stock I don’t need anymore than that anyway it should last me the rest of the year. I’m a mini stockpiler, I don’t have a need for 20+ deodorants and I don’t do donations/shelters. Glad it worked for some of you though that was a great deal for those that needed it:)

I just don’t understand how Walgreens could have gotten so far as to print signs for the shelves for the Secret that clearly said FREE (after the RR), and gone more than halfway through an ad week before realizing they weren’t really part of the deal. Clearly a case of poor corporate communications or something!
From a customer service perspective I think they should just honor it through Saturday. Afterall, the RR’s are manufacturer coupons which Walgreens will be paid for anyway once they are redeemed.

The whole thing reminds me of the problem with the Neutrogena soaps a month or so ago. I actually had a store manager and 2 employees basically telling me I was stealing from the store and I was an idiot to think I could get a $10RR for buying 3 soaps that were $6 total. Well the next day, the RR was printing again… So, who knows who thinks of these things.

Overall, even with an occasional run in with an employee or manager I love the deals I get at Walgreens, so I will keep going… : )

Did 3 deals on Wednesday morning.Went back in the pm and the signs were down. There was 1 left so I thought I would give it a try. It worked.

Well I don’t feel so bad about it not working at my store today. The signs were still up so the manager gave me hand written register rewards for the two I had purchased. She did tell the cosmetic employee to take the signs down though. It must have been a slip up – I am so glad we have a super nice manager!

Reply

Tracy M. August 12, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Alice – – Go to your cosmetic counter and ask the employee if they will check you out. In my Walgreens only the coupon users use the cosmetic counter. She is more than likely used to it and I have NEVER had a cosmetic employee treat me poorly for using coupons. Ours even keeps coupons under the counter and shares when she has extras! I think that would help your anxiety a lot. No one behind you waiting & waiting & waiting…

Worked 8/10 in northern Illinois but not in Detroit area today- no sign for RR and clearance at 2.29. I thought about calling catalina when it happpened and then saw these posts. I may just return for the sake of principle since it was snatched from Angela!

I went to one store on Tuesday and bought 10, when I went to the check out (the cosmetic counter), I was told that I couldn’t get them in 10 seperate transactions or she would lose her job (?). She called the manager and he said that if it doesn’t say “limit one per customer” then, they can not stop me. They did act like I was getting away with theft. Oh, well. I went to the other one in my area on Wednesday and checked out for 4 more. This time, there was not a RR sign but there was a clearance sign. The cashier at the cosmetic counter said that they received a memo from corporate stating that the RR was not supposed to print on the clearance. I recieved a $3 RR with each of these. She was extremlly nice and very willing to check me out for the 4 that I purchased.
By the way, I know that I purchased 14, but I do share. My mother-in-law took some for her and my sister-in-law and my mom will get some next week. We stock up each other if the other can’t go.

I’m so glad you posted this, as I had noticed this change in a couple Wags I had been in over the last couple days. What made me question it more was that the signs had been pulled. Normally if something is out of stock because it has all been purchased, the signs remain…so I had been pondering this myself.

Jasmine August 13, 2010 at 1:45 am

This is a very odd situation…
Usually clearance items are just HOT finds, but NEVER advertised with a RR sign in front of it.
My Wags also had the clearance price with the $3 RR yellow sign on it, but then yesterday I went back and the RR sign was gone. Luckily it still printed, but now that you mention this it makes all the more sense.

This is a odd situation. I can’t believe it took a few days for corporate to send a email to the stores to pull the RR deal sign off the shelfs. Can’t complaint I was able to grab a few.

Betty August 13, 2010 at 12:34 pm

I will check as soon as I get to work today, but usually if an item “cant be sold” it’s because there is a recall on it…The register will refuse the sale if it’s on a recall list…Recalls can be for many different reasons, ranging from a packaging issue, I.E. an ingredient is listed incorrectly, to unusual smells, etc..

Reply

Betty August 13, 2010 at 1:09 pm

Not so odd really, the computer systems keep track of all sales, and flags the individual stores as well as corporate if there are an unusual amount of sales on any given item..So, if literally hundreds or thousand of this product were sold in one day, someone wants to know why, and checks it out….If an item is on clearance, and sells through, we pull all signage, to make inventory tasks easier and more efficient.

Wish I would have read your blog yesterday! I went to pick up my pictures and grab a few other items and remembered about the Secret. I was so happy to spot the clearance sign AND RR deal, so I grabbed 1. Checked out and the only RR to print was for the Dial body wash. I told the cashier, who called the manager. I walked with him to the back so I could show him the sign. He then went to cosmetics counter, rang up the deo, did a cash sale and no RR printed. He voided the transaction, apologized and said I’d have to contact Catalina.

Of course, I read this after I waited 24 hrs so I could send Catalina an email. Should I take the deo back? Or keep my fingers crossed they send a RR?? If they pulled the offer, I doubt catalina can do anything now.

Christie August 13, 2010 at 4:03 pm

If they had a sign up I’d certainly call Catalina and tell them they had a sign. And quite frankly the Secret is in the ad. It doesn’t specify what secret but it has sized and the soothing effects has the sizes in there.

I got 5 before they quite working. I was wondering if it was OK to do this more than once. How often and how may times can a customer get a RR in one week?
